This is really weird, When I put in a blank CD the little box comes up asking me what I would like to do, Fine. When I put in a blank dvd, the disk spins for a short while then pops out. I have tried with different disks with the same result, any ideas.

At the risk of sounding patronising - what machine are you using? Are you sure it can write to DVD? If you have a Combo drive it will play DVDs but not write to them.
Assuming you have checked this, have a look at the CD/DVDs pane of your System Preferences. This is where you set the behaviours the Finder uses when you insert media.

Click on the apple top left Choose "About this Mac" On the popup choose "more Info" On the new two pane window look at the left pane and select "disc burning". You will see what you can and can't burn.

It feels like a software problem as it is still OK with CDs. I wonder if a preference file has got corrupted? Try changing the system pref pane to launch your DVD burning software automatically. This may overwrite the corrupt file. (I'm an optimist). I would restart my machine, although I'm not sure why. Then try again. If it works, you could change it back to the 'ask' setting if you want.
If it doesn't work, try launching your DVD writing software, telling it to burn, then wait for it to ask you to insert a DVD. See whether it works that way round.
Failing this, I fear you might need a Terminal expert - or a re-install of the operating system

I'm starting to feel like Alice in wonderland because things just are getting weirder and weirder, I have just found a old DVD+RW disk and that works !!! I have just have had a thought (the first one for this year) could the batch of disks be faulty ?? putting a babel fish in my ear will that help

could the batch of disks be faulty ?? They could be but that is unlikely. However some of the cheaper brands may play up in any DVD burner. I am not sure of the shelf life of DVD-R discs. Any chance that these are old stock? Are they DVD-R or DVD-RW? Are they duel layer or single layer. Have you tried another brand of disc?

They are Logik DVD-R, so yes they are a cheaper brand and as for shelf life I have no idea, to be honest I did not know they had one.I can't remember where I bought them to be honest It would have been a main dealer (Dixons, PC Weld or maybe even Teso). I have a friend coming round in the next few days and he's going to bring some of his disks round to try.

It is worth Googling "interface error :- 16434" you will find you are not the first. What burn speed are you using? Have you tried a lower one?

It did not matter what speed I burnt at I had the same result. I Phoned Apple and ended talking to India . I have to take it to a local seller to get the disk drive replaced. For the first time since I have had a Mac I'm nervous I feel like I should have stayed my PC then I could do it myself.

I understand your nervousness, but my experience of authorised repair centres is pretty good. Just in case, though, I would make sure I had a full backup first. I have taken an iMac to pieces, but really wouldn't recommend it. Laptops are easier - and safer!
