Seems like a silly idea to me. I can't think of when it would be useful unless it can be used as a drawing pad, which I don't think it can. www.apple.com/magictrackpad/Everyone I know with laptops use a USB mouse when they aren't on the move, and laptops have trackpads on them already.

I guess it's aimed at users of iMacs, Mac Minis, and PowerMacs. And perhaps users of older Mac laptops that don't have the full multiple-touch support (but do have Bluetooth). I don't think it'll be a big seller though.
I use my MacBook Pro at home and use its trackpad for everything. i.e. I don't use a separate mouse.
Alan.

One more thing to buy, just because we haven't got one yet!
Slightly tempting ... along with the new Apple battery charger!

I get this one. I like gestures on my laptop - and even more on my iPhone. I find using the mouse on the iMac decidedly clunky by comparison. So put one of these on the desk next to the iMac, and off I go. I agree, using it to draw - or do handwriting - would be nice. Someone will surely add this ability later?

I actually hate using Trackpads. My friend has a Dell laptop that he wanted me to fix (full of viruses, clunky, filled to the brim with useless software, you know, 'Windows problems' ), and he didn't have a mouse. The laptop sat on his desk permanently, so he used the trackpad all the time. After 10 minutes of trying to sort it out using the trackpad I realised I could have got twice as much done in half the time if I had a mouse, so I went home and brought back the USB Mighty Mouse. After that I sped along and cleaned the majority of crap off it in about hours. This experience reassured me that Vista and Dell are two things that should never have happened.

I agree with you about Vista - and since Dell destroyed my video camera, I'm not a great fan! But I think you are wrong to assume that all trackpads are the same. The one on my MBP is a thing of beauty - and very functional. Three finger swipe for next/ previous page is an absolute must - far quicker than using the back button.

Do Windows trackpads do the two finger scroll thing? I think Apple will sell a lot of these. One of them is coming my way when I can get the dosh.

Just a note in case anyone rushes out to buy one: The software for it requires OS 10.6.4. From Engadget: Right on schedule, Apple's released new drivers for the Magic Trackpad, in both OS X and Windows flavors. The download is pretty amusingly huge at 75MB, since it includes videos of all the gestures in action, but at least you'll know exactly how many fingers to use for that new three-finger drag gesture. The bad news? It requires OS X 10.6.4, so you're out of luck if you're still running Leopard and itching to get your swipe on with Apple's latest peripheral. The new software also updates the MacBook and MacBook Pro multitouch trackpads with inertial scrolling and three-finger drag, which is pretty nice -- we've got it installed on a unibody MBP and it's working as advertised. Hit up Software Update now, or check the source link to score your bits old-school.

IPhone 4 casually to the right. iPad and mbp to the left! Quite liked the black desk - sets it off well.
