you would need to install an emulator onto the G4 machine's operating system to then be able to then run System 6 or System 7. Both these operating systems ran on 68k processors rather than a PowerPC processor (which is what your G4 machine has). Mini vMac would probably be your best bet - it's home on SourceForge minivmac.sourceforge.net includes quite a bit of info in the documents section and the project still has a certain amount of active support.

The first (dark grey and light grey coloured) tower Macs with G4 processors and agp graphics cards were codenamed 'sawtooth'.... lowendmac.com/ppc/index.shtml

ooh, forgotten about this post- sorry! it's a sort of pet project really and would really like to run one of the older OS iterations on it. thanks CyberChimp, i will look into it. it's a lovely machine. i would like to eventually get a G4 Mirror Drive Door with dual processors as i think they are still very capable machines. I won an 800Mhz CPU on Ebay for my sawtooth, but the seller never sent it...shame on him. I also have a 7100/66 beige machine. but the connections for display/keyboard are all uncommon ones, so i can't just crank it up to try things out!

To be honest, I think you'll struggle to run anything less than OS8.5 on the G4. The machine came out some time after the original all-in-one iMac design, and that had to run 8.5 if I recall.
If you want System 7 on anything, you're looking at around the PowerMac 6100/7100/8100 era.

Just a quick note on processors. My first mac was a G4 Gigabit Ethernet, the next one on from sawtooth.
I had OS 9.2 & 10.3 installed, however once I upgraded the processor to a 1.2ghz I could never again boot into 9.2 without it freezing and having to do a hard reset.

The Mirror Door models still have a fair bit of oomph behind them and (apart from running Intel only apps - including Snow Leopard) do the job for me - I'm still using them in my little office and at home (it's more cost effective + productive for me to have several older machines than one new one). Be warned though that the Mirror Door G4s gained the nickname of 'wind tunnel' for a reason! The noise from them doesn't necessarily improve with age (and may actually be worse) if you're buying one 2nd hand my advice would be to try and view it working (so you can hear how noisy the individual one is or isn't) before deciding how much you want to pay!
From what I can remember, nearly everything on the 7100 series was 'non-standard' from monitor sockets to internal slots. The 7300 was slightly later, quite a bit more powerful, can run System 7.5.5 through to at least Mac OS 9.? and although it has a Mac monitor socket they often had an expansion card fitted for a second monitor (using standard PC VGA socket) which could also be used as the sole monitor if wanted.
