I think you have to take resale values into account. I upgraded from iPhone 3G to 4 this summer and sold my (unlocked) 3G within half an hour on eBay for £190, more than I paid for the 32 Gb 4 on 3 with a 2 year contract @ £30 a month. TBH I might have got more for the 3G, but I set the buy it now price and was shocked how quickly it went. So I got 'free' upgrade to iPhone 4. Well worth it.

I may be returning to the Light. I am currently using my HTC on 3. Since getting the phone, and switching to 3 from Vodafone, I've had barely any signal anywhere. Not even at home, which is in a small town. Going indoors will kill the signal, and so will being in the car. So, after numerous calls to 3, they finally told me that I have the option to CANCEL my 24 month contract, which still has about 21 months left. However, the issue is that I have to send the phone back to them. Or, I can get a massive £3 discount to make up for it. I won't do this, considering I can't even send a text in my own house. So now I'm back to looking for iPhones, because the chances are high that I'll cancel.
My friend works in McDonald's, so he gets discount on O2 contracts. That's a possibility, but even if I get the cheapest one I still need to pay more than £300 for the iPhone handset itself. (8GB iPhone 4, you can get refurb 3GS for free but I'm not too keen) So what contract is everyone here on? Where has the best one? I won't be staying on 3 Mobile.
Obviously, I want the best combination of price, texts, minutes and data. O2's site claims they limit the amount of data I use over WiFi to 1GB, this isn't possible, is it? Also, I would much rather get an iPhone than another Droid. After watching the Android OS continuously disappoint and degrade with use I yearn for the Appley goodness.

After some light research, I have found that Tesco Mobile has by far the best rates.
£25 per month 12 Month contract Unlimited texts 250 minutes 1GB data Handset is £342
But now I need to know how good Tesco Mobile is. It can't be worse than 3... Could I get a SIM card and carry it around to see my coverage?

I believe that Tesco Mobile uses the O2 network, so you could check O2's network coverage for your area, or ask friends, neighbours, colleagues who are on O2 for their experience locally.

Does anyone have any opinion on the signal reliability of Tesco Mobile? They use the O2 signal so I'm assuming they will be ok. I don't want to get caught out again like I was with 3.

Right, I'm cancelling my 3 Contract this weekend. I have backed up all contacts to the computer, as a .vcf file, which has been imported into Address Book. When the iPhone gets synced will all these contacts be put straight on? No need to type out names and numbers on the handset? That's a while away yet, though. I will be getting a SIM-only thing with the minutes and texts, and I'll revert back to my lowly Samsung D500 until June, when the iPhone 5 is out. I think, as with all Apple things, it will be the same price as the iPhone 4, so rather than having an iPhone 4 now and it being outdated in 5 months time I'd rather suffer now and get the world's greatest phone in June. (And even if the 5 is way more expensive, the 4 will be knocked down in price then)

3 are sending me a return envelope now. They said I was allowed to buy the phone off them at a discounted price as a good will gesture. £345. I told them I could could buy an iPhone for that price, so they will be getting he handset back. Once they receive it and it transfer my number using the PAC code, they will close my account for good. I did a write up about all of this on my blog, have a clicky on the link below.
