I guess I am being a bit thick! Have downloaded it more than once but when I click to open, I get the following message: "Safari can’t open the file “Steampunk clock calendar-4.widget” because no available application can open it."
More help for a dummy would be appreciated!
Thanks.

I tried the "get it button" and it took me to some general widget page. I tried the link in the comments further down the page and that download would not work for me. It did say however "This widget works with Windows XP SP3, it has not been tested on Vista, Windows 7 nor Macs. " So I am not that surprised it does not work. edit... It is GNU licensed. Does that mean you need the X11 environment active for it to work?

I am puzzled by all this. At the bottom of the box headed Get It there is an Apple Finder icon as well as Windows.
X11 environment is all getting a bit advanced for me! Perhaps Will could offer some help - it is all his fault anyway for telling us about it!!!

Perhaps Will could offer some help - it is all his fault anyway for telling us about it!!! Yup X11 is a bit advanced for me too. As far as I am aware it is a developer environment that makes Linux run on Macs. I had to use it once for some flavour of Open Office. When I used it it came as an extra on the Mac OS install disc. Most developers (Like Will) will have X11 installed on their Macs. Once installed any App. that needs it will open automagically. (I think)

^I use the X11 thing when using Windows .exe applications in Wine. It works well most of the time, but it doesn't like 'complicated' programs such as games. Otherwise, I never use the Terminal, Command Line, X11 or anything like that. Scary business.

Hopefully this attempt at an answer (and brief explanation) might help...... Each widget is a miniature application which is able to run thanks to the widget engine which is itself running on the computer. -------------------------- Since Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) Apple's computer operating system has included Dashboard which is a widget engine. Widgets created to work via Apple's Dashboard application (ie those available at www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/) will usually work 'automatically' on a Mac because the Dashboard widget engine is installed by default as part of the operating system. Because these widgets are designed specifically to work via Dashboard they are sometimes referred to as "Dashboard Widgets". -------------------------- Konfabulator (which since being purchased by Yahoo! has been known as Yahoo! Widgets) is a different widget engine. Early versions of Konfabulator pre-date the release of Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger). Versions of Konfabulator / Yahoo! Widgets are available for either a computer running Mac OSX 10.3 (Panther) and above, or a computer Running MS Windows XP and above. Because the Yahoo! Widgets widget engine is not part of any of these operating system's installation processes it needs to be installed like any other third party application before it can be used (and is currently available from widgets.yahoo.com/download/). Once the Yahoo! Widgets widget engine has been installed, widgets created for it - like the SteamPunk Clock widget in question (which I think is the one for download at widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/steampunk-clock-calendar) should, as long as they have been installed in the correct location, then be able to be run via the widget engine. Help and information relating to "Widgets" (the name Yahoo uses for the widgets themselves in it's documentation) and "Yahoo! Widgets" (the name Yahoo uses for the widget engine in it's documentation) should be available at help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/widgets/-------------------------- Other widget engines also exist (for example to one which is part of the Opera desktop web browser these days), but I'm not going to confuse matters by prattling on about these. Different widget engines work in different ways and because of this a widget designed to work via one widget engine will not work via a different widget engine (in the same way that the Windows version of an application will not work on OSX and an OSX version of an application will not work on Windows). ........that's probably made it all as clear as mud (as is usual when I try and type these sorts of explanations late at night!), but hope it may have helped a bit. ps. for what little it's worth, I personally prefer Konfabulator / Yahoo! Widgets to Dashboard - and have used it for quite a few years now on both Macs and PCs (and have never really used Dashboard at all).

It is GNU licensed. Does that mean you need the X11 environment active for it to work? The "GNU licensed" bit will just refer to the terms under which something has been released - essentially it allows the creator to dictate what can + can't be done with software and it's code after it has been released into the wide world (ie insisting that the original creator is always credited, and prohibiting people who modify the code from claiming ownership of the original code). If you're familiar with Creative Commons licensing within the music / publishing environment then it's broadly a similar concept.

Thanks for the explanation about yahoo widgets. I have now downloaded the Yahoo widget engine and have some Yahoo widgets on my iMac. Following the link given by CyberChimp took me to the SteamPunk Clock widget page but clicking Get It only took me to a general page to download other widgets. It looks as if this means that SteamPunk Clock is currently unavailable?

As a result of discovering Yahoo Widgets I have now downloaded the Grandfather Clock widget, lovely chimes and well worth a look. Not so bothered about SteamPunk clock now!

I think the way Yahoo! download requests are handled at the Yahoo! end of things may have some random issues (based on OS and browser) causing some of the problems getting the correct download page served up..... I've just done a quick test and was able to download the Widget using FireFox (but not Safari) and able to download the widget engine using Safari (but not FireFox)!! the precise page which I think it should be providing via links to get the actual Widget is badge.ydp.clientapps.yahoo.com/badge/widgets/dl/widget2/steampunk-clock-calendar/gen/Steampunk%20Clock%20Calendar.widget. The clock ticking and chiming has now annoyed me already so I'm about to delete it!

Thanks, I have now succeeded by using Firefox! All very involved.
By the way, since my last comment about the Grandfather Clock widget, I'm not so sure about it now! In particular although I rather like the chime and have silenced the ticking the clock keeps stopping when my computer goes to sleep and does not restart. I will now delve into the computer preferences.
PS I agree that the SteamFunk Clock ticking is likely to get very irritating!
