My nephew is after a Mac (his first) and I'm trying to find the cheapest option for him. He will only be using it for general stuff like browsing the web and doing school work. I'm ruling out anything that doesn't have a core 2 duo as I don't think a G4 would be good enough - I have an old PowerMac and it struggles with YouTube. So I'm thinking either a slightly older 1.83 Mac Mini from eBay plus a monitor from amazon for around £400-£450. Or a newer refurbished Mac Mini from Apple plus a monitor from amazon for around £640. Ruling out an iPad as he already has an iPod Touch and I don't believe it would be practical for his needs. Would be interested to know if people think a 1.83 Mac Mini would be good enough speed wise? Any other comments/advice welcomed

I am so out of touch. I have never been keen on the mini though. If you have to buy a monitor though wouldn't a pre loved iMac be a better buy?

I'm a bit wary of buying an iMac off eBay but have mentioned the refurb section on Apple.
Don't think I'd personally buy a Mini as I don't think you get the full Mac experience - if that makes sense. But it is still the cheapest option when it comes to new or refurbs even when you add a new monitor to the price.

Thanks for the mention on BRITISHMAC122 Will Think it's going to be either an iMac or a MacBook Pro possibly of eBay but more likely to be a refurb from Apple. Looks like his budget (or his dads) will be a bit more than first thought.
