Can I describe the new looks for iCal and Address Book as a bug? I hate them. I have a 17" MBP. Yet Address Book is confined to a tiny window lost somewhere in the middle of the screen. Ugh. Even the new full screen doesn't seem to work in it - and I have never, ever wanted to own a brown faux-leather address book or diary. Even in the 80s my Filofax was plain black leather. I just had to look at some images online at this. I use iCal a lot... I hope they release a design change option. Address Book never gets used by me. I don't see a need for it actually. My email contacts are stored with GMail and my phone is about as far from a 'smartphone' as possible.

Re Evernote; mine is Version 2.2.3 and does include the useful little elephant head icon at the top of the page - maybe a typo Beerbum? (you mentioned version 2.3.0) I'm definitely on 2.3.0 on my lIon machine. (2.2.0 on my Snow Leopard machine) Just got this email from Evernote: We'd like to inform you of a change in the latest version of the Safari web browser (5.1) on Mac and how it affects web clipping in Evernote. Safari has significantly changed the way it supports browser plugins, making the Evernote Safari Web Clipper plugin incompatible with this browser update. We're hard at work building a brand new Evernote Web Extension for Safari 5.1, which will have some cool clipping features, but it's not quite ready. It will be available in the next few weeks. In the meantime, you can continue to clip all of your favorite web content in Safari using our bookmarklet. Get it here, and then just drag the bookmarklet to your Safari link bar. To find out when the new Safari Extension becomes available, please read our blog or follow Evernote on Twitter. When it is released, we recommend that you switch to the new extension for the best Evernote experience on Safari. We apologize for the small hassle and are excited to bring you a great new browser extension very soon. Thanks, The Evernote Team

I braved an Apple store yesterday. Looks like I definitely need to buy Snow Leopard before Lion. The reason I didn't buy SL in the first place was because I thought I would just skip it and get 10.7 Alex, I am not sure you really need to get Snow Leopard, I think the only reason you would is to have the app store in order to download Lion. I will test the theory over the weekend if i have, time by installing leopard then doing a clean install of lion to see what happens. Mark

Well, I asked the Apple people in the store and he didn't know if there was going to be a Lion DVD release, so I wouldn't even be able to get the download without SL and the App Store. He also said that they weren't making SL DVDs anymore, so once the current stock is out then that's it. Does nobody here have an old copy I could get from you for cheap? (Or better still, free?)

^Unless.... A Lion download can be burned as a Disc Image to a normal DVD... OSes are difficult things to experiment with. A lot can go wrong...

As it happens I have a snow leopard disc you can have, if I can find it. Putting lion on a disc is a simple process. I only downloaded it once and used the disc to install it on my other machines.

Right-click on lion bundle, select show package contents, then navigate to contents > shared support, and copy InstallESD.dmg to your desktop. Then open that with disk utility or toast (if you have it) and burn it to a DVD

and I have never, ever wanted to own a brown faux-leather address book or diary. Even in the 80s my Filofax was plain black leather. WORD!!! On my summer 2007 model iMac and Winter 2010 MacBook Air, everything installed without a hitch. However in terms of the "features" they've added, it seems that Lion could have been designed with the express intention of pissing me off! How is Launchpad better than the applications stack? Inverse scrolling - give me a break - turned it off straight away. Mission control is okay I guess but overall the intention of making things seem all iPad-esque is clear. It's NOT AN IPAD!!! Also, why is there less colour in every part of the interface? It's all grey and dull; even the navigation bar in Safari looks all greyed out. Full screen is good on small screens but on an iMac it's a bit pointless. Why can't we have proper maximise like on Windows, where the window takes up all the available desktop but leaves the dock and menu bar in place? Don't even get me started on iCal and address book. It's all a bit different without being in any way more usable. Overall I don't dislike it as much as the above rantings would suggest but to me it's all a big pile of meh.

^What's the difference between Mission Control and Expose? Does MC show when you squeeze the side buttons of a Mighty Mouse? I use Expose DAILY and miss it really badly when on someone else's computer. And I don't like the iPad thing either. My friend sent me some screenshots of his Lion upgrade and while it looks good, it looks very iOS. Which I don't like.

www.apple.com/uk/macosx/whats-new/mission-control.htmlStill no mention of a Mighty Mouse support. This might be as much of a dealbreaker as not having SL to begin with. Also, my friend has an MBP, but uses a USB mouse. He says that he feels like he's only getting half of what it was made for if he doesn't use the trackpad. I don't want to have to buy a Magic Trackpad. I don't like them on Laptops so why would I get one now to use alongside a far superior mouse?* *However, the dropping of side buttons and middle button on the Magic Mouse annoys me, and is exactly why I haven't bought one. It means I have to deal with the non-scrolling ball though. Expose and Dashboard shortcuts on the mouse are very important to me now.

had an update from InstantAdmin - definitely NOT supported yet. The other thing that stops a full upgrade is that there are a ton of issues with Google Sketchup, which my better half is a huge user of. As to the interface debate - apart from a few aesthetics, I like the changes and don't mind the integration but then I think it's easier as a big iPad and trackpad user. Plus I am old enough to remember old Xerox word processors that had touchpads before the mouse, and having to teach people how to use people to use a mouse in the first place. The desktop metaphor was a wonderful breakthrough in computing interface terms but I think it doesn't necessarily take us any further forward. Give it some time I say. Computing is no longer a stationery thing and as such a desktop is no longer so relevant. just my pennysworth

+1 Gavin. I was beta testing lion from the start and i still don't really want an iOS device! I want OSX! The sidebar is far too grey (not gray) we asked for a colour option but it looks like it came to nothing. ical was slated for its looks by nearly everyone! Inverse scrolling? again, turned off from the start. There were lots of 'enhancement' requests to return the look back to more OSX!
that said, i like the download progress bar on the browser...
