Well dudes, this week the cat basket had a visitor. This visitor smashed his way into the building using a garden bench as a battering ram to take down the back door. Nice area, random hit. This time the odds were not in my favour. Burglar alarm meant that they stayed in the place for just a few minutes. They raided one room, a bedroom. They missed my several Macs that were in other rooms. Now to my word of caution. My desktop iMac is backed up twice. Once as a clone and once using time machine. (Super Duper and Apples own). BUT! both backups sit next to the iMac. I could have lost A LOT of data. My photos, videos, accounts and much much more. So at the very least guys, put your backup disk out of sight, so that if the men with masks and sacks with "swag" written on them do visit then they will miss your backup data.

A shame yes, Took them ten minutes, will take me 10 weeks to sort out. Bugger! Still at least my digital life is untouched. I am thinking now of chaining my iMac to the wall.

I appreciate it is no consolation, but does the iMac have the 'find my mac' option in the Cloud or is that easily defeated.

By backup hard drives are no longer visible. One is now bolted out of sight under the base of the desk. I commend this simple precaution to all.

Sorry to hear about your experience Mr Cat. I tend to make sure that everything important is "on a cloud" e.g. Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, MS Skydrive not forgetting Apple iTunes storage and Amazon too. I almost forgot I have some stuff on BT vault!! - the only difficulty is remembering just where any given item is stored. However I think this is a reasonable insurance policy. I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac, but this is strapped to the leg of the computer so this wouldn't help much if someone decided to cart off the computer! My excuse is that this is merely to guard against computer failure. The other benefit of the cloud solution is that it covers other devices such as my MacBook and iPad.
Your post is a timely reminder to us all, thanks Mr Cat.

I am now tempted to chain my iMac to the wall that it is closest too. A chain through the cable hole in the stand would not be visible and could be fastened to a staple in the wall below the desk height. A robber may smash the iMac in frustration but the internal drive should be safe.
