I have an iMac 7.1 using Mavericks. The original HD is only 300 GB and nearly full. I wish to instal a 1 TB drive, but first I must erase my current HD. I have started up from a back up drive, but Disk Utility will not let me erase the drive, neither can I just drag it into the trash.
Any ideas, anyone?

Sorry about the slow reply. If you have a backup clone, or indeed any external disk with a version of the OS on it including a CD. You boot from that external source. Simply hold down the alt key when booting up to select all of the available start up sources. You should then be able to erase your iMacs internal drive using disc utility.
