Will updated to 10.5.6 and it screwed up his Macbook. Now children, hands up, what should Will have done before he upgraded?

Bought a new one....lol Backed it up with time machine of course Good answer. I can give you a B+ for that. Time machine would have got him up and running but it would have taken a while. Anyone want to try for an A?

Repair permissions beforehand and afterwards too?

Repair permissions beforehand and afterwards too? Now that is a nice answer. It is always a good idea to use whatever disk management tools that you have to check that all is well before doing something as major as an OS upgrade. This however would not help Will if the code that Apple sent in the update was faulty in some way (it has happened) So [teachers voice] very good Alan I can see that someone was paying attention last lesson. Now who else has any ideas, hands up, hands up. [/teachers voice]

Check for compatibility updates for major third party hardware before taking the plunge.

Check for compatibility updates for major third party hardware before taking the plunge. Well done, the new girl in the corner. I can see that you are going to quite a star. Of course one should wait awhile to see if drivers for your hardware are broken by the update. A visit to the M-Audio website would have shown Will that his audio interface driver was not going to cope and he should not have upgraded till it was. Anyone who relies on their machine for their living should not be an early adopter of new OSs or new updates to those OSs. Let others make the mistakes and learn from them. So a gold star for you, BUT that was not only thing Will should have done. *Clears throat* You boys at the back, you have not said anything yet what do YOU think Will should have done?

made a full backup with super duper or a similar app then done the update Exactement mon ami. He could then boot from the external drive and carry on without a hitch. He would be working again within five minutes. Then when he had the time he could re-clone the external drive back to his MacBook with one click. It would take about ten hours but he could do that overnight. As a side benefit all of his files would be de-fragmented in the process. So a big tick and an A for you. Now for a merit, because Will has an old MacBook what would have to be special about the drive that he backed up to and why? Anyone can answer don't be shy now.

You will write out 50 times "Spelling matters" on the board. As to your response, you did not read the question properly did you? We wanted to know what should Will have done before he upgraded? So Lexy your grade is F
