So do you think that people will just have the option to upgrade from the 3G to the next one (if there is going to be one soon) for free? I hope so.

I'm not expecting a hardware upgrade yet. Firstly, the announcement looks set to be made at the Developer's Confernece - which remains software focussed - and secondly because the new software looks to transform the existing phone. My guess is that you'll have to wait until October for new hardware. But my predictions are pretty universally wrong! I bought my original 8Gb just a week before the 16Gb was announced. As for the cost - there is no such thing as a free lunch. The 'free' 3G iPhones are only available if you sign up to a £35 per month contract (for an 8Gb) or £45 (for a 16Gb). Last time, O2 "generously" allowed me to give them £99 provided I signed up to another 18 month contract.
