I am impressed but puzzled by the accuracy with which my wifi iPad (no GPS) registers my latitude and longitude at home when compared with my car satnav. Not certain how it does this, maybe by data from my IP address? Can someone please enlighten me?

Magic. ;D There's obviously no real explanation other than in the Apple Factory a Unicorn was turned to powder and was sprinkled on every iPad before boxing.

There's a technique known as Wireless Positioning System (WPS) based on WiFi hotspots. According to Skyhook, they cover a large part of the USA and UK. www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/

Or perhaps by IP Taken from WikiM. le ChatI was suspicious of this technique, because when I was with PIPEX, my IP address suggested that I was located in Berkshire instead of Kent. There's a new UK app titled "Postmap" which uses the IP address then (I guess) links to WHOIS to reveal postcodes for the surrounding area. The trouble with this is that I'm using a BT router connected to BT as its ISP, and despite locating me correctly on a map, it can't find my IP address and so can't locate my ISP. So I can't verify that it works! Actually (come to think of it) I can verify that it doesn't work.
