Thought I'd share this with you guys. I'd tried several times to like the IOS 4 update on my iPhone 3G, but when I tried to use it, the phone just became dog-slow and unusable. I managed to downgrade back to IOS 3.1.3 and noticed an immediate speed increase. Thinking that all was lost on my ageing 3G, due to it's limited hardware, I decided to search one more time for a solution to the slow performance issues. To my surprise, the culprit seems to be Spotlight indexing(i think). If you turn off all of the Spotlight search options from within the Settings/General/Home Button/Spotlight search, it speeds up IOS 4 on the phone 3G quite a bit.

But do you then lose spotlight?

^My friend tried putting OS4 on his 3G and said this via his Twitter: 'Running ios4 on a iPhone 3G is similar in some ways to running windows vista on a aged dell boy' Pretty accurate description?

Yeah, I guess you do lose the Spotlight functionality. Personally, I never used it and the overall speed increase of the phone was more important. I haven't experienced the lag when typing in sms or emails like I did before I switched the Spotlight prefs off, and general usability is vastly improved. As for "Running ios4 on a iPhone 3G is similar in some ways to running windows vista on a aged dell boy", that was definitely my experience when I first loaded IOS 4, but I'm not sure I agree now. Give it a go. You can always turn the Spotlight settings back on again. Dave;-)

Yes I have done it too.
I wonder if we will get a tweak on a later OS upgrade?

I checked, and indeed I'd only allowed Spotlight for email, contacts and calendar so it was OK. For my iPod touch, I find that video takes a lot of power, so I'm gradually converting back to audio podcasts - most of them don't make use of visual clues anyway. And I must remember to use Aircraft mode. (A warning comes up saying that I can't use the "Find my iPhone" service, so I must remember to turn it on just before I lose it :-)

I am wondering if the upgrade is worth the performance hit.
I could revert to IOS3 but that would be a lot of trouble.
I am keeping my claws crossed that a future update will sort it out.

I also found that a "double" hard reset helped - press the Home and Power keys simultaneously, ignore the slide to power off and wait for the Apple symbol to show, wait for the 3g to reboot, then do exactly the same thing again. No one seems to know why it helps, but quite a few others are reporting that it does. Perhaps it is clearing out some caches somewhere. The other tip is to check how many windows Safari has open. They stay open in the background and seem to suck the life out of a 3G

It's not that hard to revert back to IOS 3.1.3. I did it several times before realising the 'spotlight issue' went some way to alleviating some of the problems. try this if you're still not happy with IOS 4... lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-dow....os-4-to-ios-313

I've heard that if you do a full restore it helps.

Steve has just emailed a complainant to say that a fix is 'coming soon'. It is being reported that iOS4.1 is running significantly better on 3G by beta testers, so let's hope it is released soon.

Are you saying that you've tried this and it didn't work for you(you must've done something wrong. it's child's play, honestly) or have you got so much money you can lend me £500 for a new iPhone 4
