Hello folks, I've just bought an iMac, and have an app idea for the iphone and ipad. I've never developed on the iphone or the mac platform. I've downloaded xcode, and going through a few tutorials. Then I came across the 'iphone developer programs'. I wasn't aware of this, and i think to enroll for this programme I have to pay 99$/year. Is this membership required to build an iphone app? I *don't* want to submit an app yet. Of course when my app is ready I'll have to become a member of the 'iphone developer program', but is the membership essential for app *development*. Thanks for reading this!! I'm still very new to this dev. Be nice. - A J

I'm not a developer but I think you have it right. You can download the current version of the developer kit for free if you register as a developer this gives you the basic tools you need - but you can only run your app in emulation mode on your Mac. In order to test it on an actual iPhone/ iPad - and to submit it to Apple for approval, you have to pay the $99. Which seems a bit steep if you want to give your app away - or only want to develop something for internal use by your company or whatever. Of course, you can always go down the jailbreak route.

Yes, that's right.
If you can find a kind soul who is registered on the programme, they could register your hardware device and issue you with a provisioning profile. This would enable you to deploy your code onto your device and actually use the hardware for using your app, once you get to that point (the simulator is fine to start off with). However the provisioning profile needs to be renewed every couple of months (... so it would need to be someone you know well and who wouldn't mind having to keep doing it!)
