Yes, it started in the Trailer feature of iMovie in iLife 11, but also there's a really handy command called something like "Convert to Project", which converts the trailer footage that you've assembled into a normal project with video & audio clips on the normal timeline. So once it's in the form of a normal project, you can do all the normal iMovie stuff like adding still pictures, adding Ken Burns effects , tweaking the timing etc.
It's Great fun to play with. :-)
