I've just been SLIMED! I feel so filthy… Just had a 'rogueware' experience in Safari. I was searching for an image of Otto the inflatable autopilot from Airplane (don't ask). When I clicked on the image Safari launched new tab and downloaded a zip file! I immediately quit Safari and cleared my history and the files from my download folder.
It was scary however and a 'normal' user could be very easily convinced! must go for a shower… uurgh!
From Macworld "A security firm that specializes in Mac software called the move "a very big step forward" for malware makers targeting Apple's users.
Phony antivirus software, dubbed "rogueware" by security experts, has long plagued people running Microsoft Windows, but this is the first time scammers have targeted the Mac with a sophisticated, professional-looking security application, said Peter James, a spokesman for Intego, a Mac-only antivirus company headquartered in France.
"This is indeed a very big step forward for Mac malware," said James.

Hmmph.
So what, as long as you don't mount the downloaded zip you're fine?
I wouldn't anyway. People who would open and install it deserve to be slimed.

Well, I think we're safe then. These new malware things may be able to download themselves, but they need to cross my stupidity firewall before they get inside my computer. ;D

I've downloaded and run Sophos anti virus, it's free and not clunky. It s up a malware file and deleted it! Worth the money. Oh it's free!

Yup, I did the same. I haven't noticed any performance hit, and I know at least the scanning engine works as it discovered something I've been deliberately holding onto in my email from years ago (I can't remember what now - a key logger or something similar).
Whilst I believe the risk is fairly low on OS X at the moment, and I'm a fairly savvy user, I've decided the additional belt 'n braces layer of protection is doing no harm.

^I downloaded Sophos as well the other day. It found nothing Suck it, Windows. However I wish it had an 'Estimated Time remaining' thing. Scanning over 1,600,000 files took a few hours and I had no idea how long it would take.
