I really enjoyed the podcast of the WWDC. Seen it twice now. Three strands. Lion iOS iCloud. I am not sure which of the three will most affect me. Lion probably. I am tempted to get a touchpad for my iMac to make the most of the multi touch. Lion main new features are listed here. www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

I have a question about Lion. I got an email saying I can just download it for £20.99 from the Mac App Store. That's great, except I don't have Snow Leopard, and therefore no App Store.
What do I have to do? I don't want to by Snow Leopard just to upgrade to Lion on the same day.

This is a very good point. I wonder if Apple will lower the price of Snow Leopard by £20.99? This would seem to make sense to me. Definitely a topic worthy of investigation.

From what I have read, there won't be any alternative other than upgrading to Snow Leopard prior to Lion. Effectively meaning your Lion upgrade will cost twice as much.
In my opinion it would be worth hanging on to see if the price of Snow Leopard is reduced once Lion is released but I do nt think they will reduce it.

The outlook is a bit grim on the Apple Forums. They all reckon I'll need to buy SL then buy Lion to upgrade. Even then, I'll be looking at a 15-20 hour download if it is around 5GB. Seriously, Apple. Stop this cloud rubbish until the whole world has decent internet access. I have and always will detest downloads for music, games or programs over physical media. To me, iTunes is a horrible service. I want CDs.

To me, iTunes is a horrible service. I want CDs. You could always move to Microsoft! Windows 7 Home premium is only £112.28 on Amazon, as opposed to the £20.56 for Snow Leopard and the £20 odd it will be for Lion…. Or stick with Leopard - nothing wrong with that especially for those that don't have at least Core 2 Duo. …and the download only Lion install? I think we have to wait and see on that one. I think they'll have to deliver an alternative in the end. they just backed down on in-App purchases and they'll deliver a different option in the end. and on the cloud rubbish, I'm really looking forward to having all my devices sync without being connected to the iMac…. I occasionally get grumpy at Apple too - exhibit 1, MobileMe m'Lud .. and then I take another sip, nay gulp of ale, admire my devices and feel smug over all those poor B@$tuds that have to use MS all the time ;o) Can't wait for Lion and IOS5 myself, download or no Cheers

I am not sure which of the three will most affect me. Lion probably. I am tempted to get a touchpad for my iMac to make the most of the multi touch. The touchpad is just the business! Takes a bit of getting used to and then you really miss it when on a mouse based machine. Do cats love or hate mice? I was a bit wary of the price but I think it's quite transformational… not magical, but really, really good. I think iCloud will be the biggest thing in the end. It's a huge strategic play for Apple and they can't afford to get it wrong. It will remove many of the current frustrations that we put up with having many Apple devices. The only downside is maybe that the ease of buying and using an IOS device will be so much more, and they sell even more that the Mac side may become less important… but that's probably just inevitable as computing changes and we all have communicators and tricorders…oh! We DO have them! now what about phasers?!! Please uncle Steve, can we have a phaser now please, pleeeease?!! I mean, you're getting a spaceship in Cupertino...

^I know it wouldn't cost much, but why would I like paying £40 rather than £20? Upgrading to SL then again to Lion both in the same day seems like a complete waste.
There must be loads more people in my position who never got round to upping to SL but want Lion.
My Dad gave Vista a miss and went to Windows 7 from XP. Surely they will do a DVD option. I really hope they do. I don't want to run up my downloads as well as leave my computer turned on for 20+ hours.

If you do decide to get SL don't forget the existence of the Mac Box Set ClickyQuite a saving IF you don't have the iLife/iWork stuff up to date. Ebay can save you a bit on Apple prices too.

I don't want to by Snow Leopard just to upgrade to Lion on the same day. To be honest, you really should have updated to Snow Leopard for about £25 absolutely *ages* ago. Then you'd have seen the benefit of it for almost 2 years! Seriously, anyone with a machine capable of upgrading to Snow Leopard who didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard for a measly £25 has missed out on a great deal (in all senses of the phrase).

Seriously, anyone with a machine capable of upgrading to Snow Leopard who didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard for a measly £25 has missed out on a great deal (in all senses of the phrase). Do you think so? Snow Leopard had very few added features hence the low price point, it certainly didn't change the way I use my mac compared to how Lion may. Which then creates another point the low price point of Lion with all its added features makes Snow Leopard a tad expensive. However i have been giving this a lot of thought, as I see it you have 2 options 1. Upgrade to Snow Leopard and use it for a while, no-one says you have to upgrade to Lion immediately, and I know a number of people that wont upgrade to 10.7 they would rather wait till 10.7.1 (clears a few silly bugs see) 2. Surely if X amount of people upgrade to Lion, then there will be plenty of Snow Leopard discs sitting gathering dust, maybe a friend or colleague etc would give you their copy as hopefully they will no longer require it (hopefully there will be a method of creating a Lion install disc/usb stick) Either way I would wait until Lion is released and see if Apple do anything with the pricing of Snow Leopard.

^Yeah, that seems the most sensible option. Plus, if I wait there is a chance a Lion DVD will also be released which you can get from the Apple Store.
