I have been looking for some sort of external storage solution for the iPad for some time. Have tried a few hard drives that share files themselves but the problem with them is they need to be attached to a power source. Had one working in the car for camping/caravan trips etc but obviously the problem they need to be connected to a wireless network as well as power, and are not much use unless you are within 50 feet or so of the car.
So today I think have solved the problem with a Seagate GoFlex Satellite 500GB wireless hard drive. It creates it's own wireless network, once you connect your iPad/iPhone to it you an view it's content via the free app or a web browser, so load it up with movies, pictures, documents etc and you can take a large amount of content out and about with you. So far I am happy with it, the only improvement I think they could make is to allow you to upload content from your iPad to the hard disk (ie photo library) but I hope that functionality will be added in time.
It claims 5 hours battery life with 25 hours standby and comes with cables to charge from mains and car cigar lighter. And it's a bit bigger than an iPhone and maybe twice as thick.
I have only played with it for an hour or so in the pub on the way home (well we had to drive the 10 miles to town to get it so might as well make the most of the trip) but so far it's pretty good.
Once I have had a bit more use out of it I will let you all know how I am getting on.
Cin-cin!

Mark, I know you are using this for IOS devices but do you know whether the drive will work with OSX, specifically Time Machine? Since my Iomega network drive no longer works with Lion and Time Machine I have been looking for something to back up my Macbook Air without harnessing it to a USB hard drive, which always seems a bit naff when you have such a mobile laptop.
Thanks

Hi Murray,
The drive insists on being formatted in NTFS otherwise the instructions say it will not work so you might find it will not share a mac formatted partition so I think you might be out of luck for time machine. I have not looked to see if it can be mounted wirelessly, only with the cable so far.
Have you thought about using an apple airport router and attaching a USB drive to that for time machine?
Which reminds me, my time machine drive died a few weeks ago. Better see about fixing it....
