Looks like I'm booking a trip to my local genius bar.
My 24" iMac has developed a fault.
I am losing the display after a period of time, all other features seem to work ok still after the display has gone. Once my display goes to sleep, or if I restart I can't get the screen back on.
If I leave the iMac for a few hours it will work ok again.
I will keep,you all updated.

An update
I dropped my iMac off at my local Apple store (bullring - Birmingham) on Tuesday 3rd April.
The genius I spoke to explained that it could be the display, she said they didn't have one in stock so she would order one straight away, they would try the new display in my iMac, if it works then they would contact me to see if I was prepared to accept the £400 charge otherwise, they would replace with my old display.
If the display wasn't at fault then they would try the graphics card followed by the logic board.
My iMac is an early 2008 model and was purchased in September 2008. Only just out of warranty.
I did get a quote from DrHappyMac in the meantime, but he was more expensive than Apple on the display repair.
I have been contemplating all week whether the iMac is worth spending £400 or more on.
It has now been with Apple for a week and I haven't heard anything, I have literally just come off the phone from them.
They were very apologetic for not getting back to me sooner, apparently someone should have called me 4 days ago
They have tried a new display and an external display and the fault is still there.
The next step is to try the graphics card, the guy I have just spoke to on the phone says this repair is about £100.
I am now awaiting a call back from an engineer to explain what is happening next.

** Final Update **
I have finally got my iMac back after being with Apple for 2 weeks, the problem turned out to be the logic board.
The quote to fix this was £555, however I complained that a 3 1/2 year old machine should not require this level of repair. I also complained about the amount of times that I have had to contact the store, due to the fact they have failed to return my call.
The upshot of this was that I got 25% discounted from the price of the repair, further to this, when I collected my iMac they removed the labour charge also.
So I am back in the land of Mac and a happy bunny
