I had this error on both my i-Mac and Powerbook in the same day! I had been using a cheap brand of CDs and they screwed up both Mac drives, making them sound like a low-flying aircraft! Horrible.
Solution: Give drive a thorough blast of compressed air from a tin with plastic tube at mouth of drive. Be generous with it. Also, invest in a CD lens cleaner and use it several times over! Then use a better brand of CD. Worked for me.
Everything pointed to the cheap and nasty CDs (cheap can cost you dearly... false economy) They must have deposited crap on both Macs' DVD writer lenses. Lost half a day's production sorting this out! Hope it helps...
