Just watching "I love 1972". There seems to be a bit of a 70's theme going on at the moment.
The penny tray was a tray full of 1p (and 1/2p) sweets that you could pick from and spend your pennies on. Don't know if it was a general thing, or just in my local village shop.

Our local athletics club still has a 'penny tray' you can choose from a selection of 1,2,5 and 10p sweets which are then placed in a bag.
Its purpose is to raise funds for the club and although aimed at the children its surprising how many adults make a selection to go with their cup of tea.
Great fun

The shop in our village still has penny trays - consequesntly her shop is packed full of school kids between 3:30 & 4:30 EVERY school day

Penny trays in my part of the world pretty much just meant fruit salads and blackjacks. I was more of a sherbet dipp cat myself.

Sure do remember them. Wouldn't be allowed nowadays would it ? Health and safety and all that rubbish. Can you imagine the bugs there used to be on those trays that all us sticky fingered kids left as we picked up our bubblies and sherbets ? Lol
