I haven't used my old (original version) Apple TV for ages, but recently wanted to listen to some new iTunes music but have been unable to get it to sync. I am using the latest versions of iTunes and Mavericks. When I select the option to "connect to iTunes " on the Apple TV a code and instructions comes up as normal but when I open iTunes Preferences 'Devices' there is no sign of the Apple TV.
I have checked that the network is OK, I can download a film trailer although all of my photos have disappeared from the Apple TV as well as the original music.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks Stupid question, but you have turned on Home Sharing, haven't you? It may be worth turning it off, quitting iTunes then turning it on again...

Thanks Rob
I believe that was one of the many things I tried but will check later.

I have now checked sharing is on and have re-started everything in sight! Although the internet connection to the Apple TV is fine (Apple films etc ready to be purchased !) No sign of the Apple TV being seen on the iMac. I have also tried connecting via my MacBook Air (on the same network) - same result! Anyone want to buy an Apple TV? I am now using Spotify and it seems to work pretty well.

Some ISPs these days have 2 SSIDs, one for the main home network and another as a free wifi hotspot for anyone within range. BT are the main ISP to do this, offering passers by a free wifi access point on the FON network. The 'free' SSID doesn't count towards any data cap you may have and is completely separate from the home network so the freeloaders can't see any of the machines on your own network. Alternatively a neighbour may be with the same ISP as you are and the ATV may have connected to their network (esp if it's unprotected by password.) This actually happened to a cousin of mine - his ATV connected to next door's TalkTalk wifi rather than his own TT wifi as theirs had no password set. It seems that ATV will take the easy option as far as wifi connection is concerned if it's available

Thanks Rob, I do have a BT router and BT Fon. Not sure at the moment how to check/change connection but will certainly look in to that possibility.
Not quite so enthusiastic about Spotify as last time I wrote, some of my Playlist items (imported from iTunes) are greyed out on my smart TV and my Kindle Fire HDX tablet says "track unavailable" Grrrrr
