Works a treat with Apple installed fonts. If, however, you have TrueType, Type 1 or OpenType fonts installed by other software (Adobe, Mickeysoft, etc), or like me you have a 3000 typeface library purchased at great expense, then all you will get is a blank character.

Tip 14
Spotlight Application Launcher
This is a Leopard only tip
Spotlight can be used as an application launcher. How it works is this
Hold the Command key ( key) and then the Spacebar to open Spotlight. Then begin to type the name of the application. Normally the desired application will be highlighted in Spotlight within two or three letters. Hit the Return key to launch the app.
A little less well known feature is that if the application that you want to use has a two words as it's name for example Quicktime Player then typing the initials with a space in between will find it too. So type Q P for Quicktime Player or P B for Photo Booth and so on.

Tip 15
Spotlight Calculator
This is a Leopard only tip
Spotlight can be used as a simple calculator. How it works is this
Hold the Command key ( key) and then the Spacebar to open Spotlight.
Then begin to type the calculation. Remember that for computers divide is the / key and multiply is the * key.
As you type the answers appear in the spotlight bar.

i didn't know Command/Space Bar opened Spotlight! It doesn't for me. But then I have turned it off to stop it clashing with the zoom keyboard shortcut in all the Adobe applications.

Tip 16 Spotlight Main WindowSometimes the little Spotlight search bar does not cut it. So if you want the more sophisticated "main window" for Spotlight here is the shortcut. Hold alt/option key the Command key ( key) and then the SpacebarYou get more options including the ability to limit your search to recent days.

Tip 17 Spotlight your preferencesBring up the System Preferences pane (loads of ways to to this but I click on the blue Apple top left and then select System Preferences) When it is open simply type something into the often ignored search field top right of the Preferences pane. For example the word "mouse" will "spotlight" in a rather cool way all the places where you mouse can be "tweaked".

Tip 18 Make a text clippingMost people have figured out that if you want to copy an image from say a web page onto your desktop then all you do is click on it and drag it to your desktop. However if you want to do the same with text it is a little more involved. 1. Highlight the text on the page. Then release the mouse so you are no longer clicking. 2. Click on the highlighted text, hold the click and then drag the text to the desktop. This makes a clipping that can be dragged or otherwise used in other applications.

Tip 19
Selecting text
Just to add a little to the previous excellent trick:
Double-click to highlight a word. Triple-click to highlight a paragraph (in a browser, at least).
The amount of clicks required to select stuff depends on the application. For example, most DTP apps have several degrees of clickage from word, line, paragraph, column, the whole text run and so on.

Tip 20
Selecting text 2
Text can be selected by dragging the curser over the text whilst holding the click. I would guess that is the method most folk will use.
However another useful way to select text is to position the text cursor (caret) at one end of text then whilst holding the shift key click on the other end of the text. The bit in-between gets selected.
Sadly this second method will only work with editable text so you can't use it on a web page for example.
This "shift click" method is useful for selecting multiple songs in iTunes and multiple photos in iPhoto and multiple files in Finder as well as lots of other stuff.

Tip 21
Selecting Text 3
If you select multiple items in a Finder window using Mr Cat's method, and then realise you didn't want some of the items at all, hold the Command key and click the items you don't want. They will be deselected.
Equally, you can use the Command + click to select noncontiguous (sorry!) items in a list or column view. This sometimes works in better behaved Open dialogs, too.

Tip 22 How to do the "clicky" thiingNot a Mac tip but a question that gets asked a LOT. How do you do a "clicky" when posting a link on this forum? Normally you just paste the url. For example www.google.co.ukTo convert this to a clicky you have to add "tags" so the link will look like this {url=www.google.co.uk}This is a clicky{/url}The stuff in red HAS to be there except that you use the square brackets [ ] instead of the { } brackets used in the example above. Leave no gaps or spaces. The stuff in green becomes the clicky. For a more full explaination as always see Wiki Clicky
