as I know you still can't boot a Mac from an external USB disk. I think you can from the Intel Macs. Mark

A bit more research indicates that Mark is right - with provisos. Intel Macs can boot from USB 2 disks, providing they are formatted using the GPT partition scheme - which PowerPCs can't read. So, no sharing my external hard drive with my wife's old eMac, then. I'll stick to Firewire for now

I have just ordered a USB only cheapo HDD to make a Super Duper Clone of my Macbook. I am beginning to wish that I had paid a bit more and got a duel port device.

Well my external HDD arrived today. I installed Super Duper on my MacBook, formatted the external drive as Mac OS extended Journaled and made a backup clone. It worked a treat first time and I was able to boot from it via USB2 no problem.

Yep, works fine with carbon Copy Cloner too - I have a cheap USB 2 drive I got from Aldi and I boot Tiger from that, just formatted it was Mac OS extended Journaled.
