Hi all I currently use a Sony Erricsson K850i, but the missus has got an iPhone 3G, and... horror of horrors, SHE HATES IT!
So, she has asked me to swap phones and I really want her phone but don't want to swap numbers. I am on T Mobile. I have looked extensively on all the blogs/forums etc that I can find but none are really UK specific so I am hoping to get a techy person on here who has done it and that I can trust!
British Mac seems a friendly place and I hope to get some good replies.
Many thanks all! Regards, Steven.

As far as I'm aware, no one has yet hacked a 3G iPhone to run on another network. Install 3rd party apps without the use of the app store, yes, but run on a network other than o2? Not that I know of.

Couldn't you port the T Mobile number?
Or, set up a divert on T Mobile to the iPhone. I did this as I was still on contract to Orange for a while when I bought my iPhone. I just couldn't wait for the contract to run out as I'd had enough of crappy phones and carrying phone, PDA, camera, chargers and batteries around.
Mind you there's still a DSLR in my bag all the time ;-)

there is a sim card hack device called YesSim which costs about £22 +£3.75 delivery from this site which should work with your tmobile sim. However I have neither tested or know anyone who has used one of these so try at your own risk

I agree with Ian - just port the number across. I gave my old iPhone to my wife when I got the 3G. The process of porting her number was relatively straightforward. O2 should be able to advise on details.

Just be aware, when I asked about this at the local O2 shop I was told that the number had to be ported within 28 days of signing the iPhone contract.

I just found out that the clever people at iphone-dev.org have released a soft unlock for the iphone 3G. As far as I understand, you need to be running the latest firmware 2.2, and the iphone needs to be jailbroken. I've spent quite some time reading about this today. Jailbreaking seems pretty straightforward using QuickPwn. There are loads of instructions on the web, for instance at iClarified.com. Then you use the new app, codenamed yellowsn0w. This really appeals to me as I would then be able to use my work sim in my iphone, and also use local sims when abroad. However, I have never jailboken (if that is the correct term) an iphone before and the success rate of yellowsn0w seems to be about 70% (by eye, looking at report.yellowsn0w.com/index.php). I wondered if anybody on this forum has tried, or had any comments? For instance, I can't seem to understand whether it works for OSX 10.5.6 or not. I won't be doing it until I feel a bit more comfortable that it will all work.

Try this Clicky, it was an ad on your forum and it looks like what you want

As I understand it that link is a scam. They use the iphone-dev.org developments and try and sell them, and there's loads of annoyance on the various blogs, see e.g. blog.iphone-dev.org/At this time, there is only one way to unlock a 3g iphone and that's using yellowsn0w

I thought it looked too good for an ad, I've noticed the forum is now ad-free, that's good!
