Hello all you iPeople I got a new iPod Touch for Christmas. It's absolutely great, loving it! It's just so pretty, I mean lying on the sofa, listening to British Mac, and browsing the PCC at the same time!!! But unfortunately, when I plugged my iPod into my old Dock, it said charging is not supported with this device! Anyway, the sound worked, so I went to sleep listening to British Mac, and I woke up in the morning with a flat battery, so I went to plug it in to my old Mains iPod adaptor, same error. I tried it with my sisters iPod Nano (New One) as well, and the same message. This is leading me to believe that there is a new standard with charging on iPod docks. Is it worth/possible getting an adaptor or should I just get a new one? Help Please!

Wasn't there a cable in the box with the thing?
I'd have thought a straight USB to dock connector cable would do the job, provided there's enough juice coming from the USB socket.

My Dock has an iPod out, and yes there was a cable in the box, but what I mean is how can I charge it from my dock?

Dunno, sorry. But at least you can charge it with the supplied cable until you find a dock that works.

My Dock has an iPod out, and yes there was a cable in the box, but what I mean is how can I charge it from my dock? You can't. As I understand it there are two standards that have been used by Apple. The old iPods that used the Firewire pins on the dock to charge and the new ones that use the usb pins. I believe that they come in at different voltages and are not interchangeable. This is a pain but for the newer gadgets you will need the newer type of dock. CC

The Dock connector uses different pins for USB and FireWire charging. Which model of iPod you have determines whether you can use FireWire, USB, or either for charging: - 3rd Gen iPod (the ones which had buttons and no click wheel) can only be charged via FireWire.
- 4th Gen iPod, 5th Gen iPod, 5.5 Gen iPod, iPod Mini, 1st Gen Nano & 2nd Gen Nano can be charged via FireWire or USB.
- iPod Classic, 3rd Gen Nano, 4th Gen Nano, iPod Touch & iPhone can only be charged via USB.
If you are using an Apple branded Dock, combined with an Apple branded cable (or identical copies of the Apple originals made by a third party), then this combination will almost certainly charge via USB or FireWire pins based on which type of cable is attached to the dock. If your dock is a third party model which is powered by a mains electric cable (as opposed to using an Apple branded iPod cable with docking connector) then the dock will dictate whether it provides power to the FireWire or USB pins to charge the iPod. Some makes and models of these types of docks include a little switch somewhere (often on the underside) which allows you to choose if the iPod charging circuit it uses is a FireWire or USB one. I hope this hasn't confused things even more!

hmmm.... My old iPod was second on your list, and of course my new iPod touch is the newest, everything I have is USB, I have tried BOTH a mains adaptor, and a dock with external power, why dosen't the new iPod work with the old dock, they are BOTH USB?!?!

I hope this hasn't confused things even more! Too late. hmmm.... My old iPod was second on your list, and of course my new iPod touch is the newest, everything I have is USB, I have tried BOTH a mains adaptor, and a dock with external power, why dosen't the new iPod work with the old dock, they are BOTH USB?!?! But the old dock may still have the power running to the FW pins (despite having a USB cable). The new iPod will pick up the power from the USB pins only.

if you tell us what the make (and model) & give a brief description of all your dock(s), cable(s) and power adaptor(s) are it may be possible to give a better answer.......
Otherwise, the only guess I can make is that you are using: a) a third party dock which is supplying power to the FireWire pins from a mains electric input (possibly in addition to powering built in speakers, radio, alarm clock, etc), but also has a USB connector included - which is there so that the iPod can be synced while it is docked. b) a third party iPod mains adaptor which has a 3 pin mains electric plug at one end, an iPod connector at the other end and a cable permanently attached between them (but supplying power to the FireWire pins).
(if your dock &/or power adaptor are made by third parties and you still have the packaging or manuals for them have a look to see if they mention anything about being able to power 3rd Gen iPods - if they say that they can do this then then the power must be getting supplied to the FireWire pins)
-------------------------------
Just to check - are all the iPods charging correctly when you connect them using a genuine Apple branded USB to iPod connector cable attached to a computer's USB port? Have you been able to try charging them using a genuine Apple branded USB to Ipod connector cable attached to a genuine Apple branded USB Power Adaptor?

Yes, my iPods charge correctly in the USB, my dock is logitech, and I think that you are right in that my old ipod's power was being supplied to the FireWire pins, thanks for your help and time
