I did suggest removing all his hardware (except keyboard & mouse & monitor if it's a mac pro) before updating, and using the Combo Updater, do I get any marks for that, or did he try that?

LOL I used to teach people like you. No his MacBook is not a Mac Pro and shouting out in class does not usually gain extra marks. The unplugging of external devices is a sensible suggestion before an OS upgrade. The Combo Updater is a matter of contention. In theory the Combo should be a more risky way to upgrade as it forces more changes but in practice it does seem to work better than the incremental updates. So go on then I will up your grade to an E. Now sit down before I change my mind. Back to my recent question. What would have to be special about the external drive that Will should use for his clone? (Give your reasons). Bear in mind that he has an older machine.

Is it a different way that the old Macs partition the drive or a different file saving system they used? Not really sure as I haven't had a Mac for long!

*Put my hand up*
Mr.Cat Sir, is it something to do with the way that in Disk Utility my drive reads as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Also, when I plug a drive that I have plugged into my mac into a windows machine, it reads a folder called "_MACOSX" am I right sir?

Although i never owned one personally i believe the older PowerPC Macs including Mr Greens PowerBook (Technically not a macbook) will only boot from a Firewire drive and not from a USB external drive whereas the newer Intel Macs will boot from USB

Although i never owned one personally i believe the older PowerPC Macs including Mr Greens PowerBook (Technically not a macbook) will only boot from a Firewire drive and not from a USB external drive whereas the newer Intel Macs will boot from USB A perfect answer Doc. Take your merit and a gold star for that. The whole point of a cloned backup is that you can boot from it. Anyone who earns their living from their Mac should have a cloned backup in addition to the Time Machine backup. This means that you are back to work and productive again within 5 minutes of having a problem. Even a problem as large as a HDD failure. Super Duper makes a clone every night for me on my main system and I make a manual clone before I make any changes to my laptop. This came in very useful when I had to send the lappy back for a new case. I wiped the drive before sending it and restored it from the clone when I got it back. Super Duper is free for the basic install and external hard drives are now very affordable. (Other cloning utilities are available) Anyway unless anyone else has something to add, you can all go out to have your break now. Leave your books on my table as you leave and don't forget your bags. Mr Cat

Please sir, please sir, should he use a FireWire disk sir? Because his old Macbook won't boot from USB, Sir? Please sir? I think you'll find that all "MacBooks" do actually boot from USB its just the older PowerPC based "iBook" and "PowerBook" laptops that need the Firewire to boot

After the error, could he have reinstalled via the Combo update before attempting to zap his machine with an Erase & Install?
