I'm using Yahoo messenger to talk to a friend in Italy. I can use the webcam function on messenger and we can both see each other. However, there doesn't appear to be any sound, he can't hear me and I can't hear him, I've done a test and my microphone works ok on ichat and Skype. Is there anyway I can set the webcam up so that sound works on Yahoo Messenger??

It appears not.
Looking at Yahoo forum posts: Why no "Voice capability" for Mac?? If it can't do voice... well what's the point of it? That's like buying a TV with captions but no sound. And how is this product "worth the wait" if it can't even do something as fundamental as transmit sound? And why no mention of it in the products documentation? All is forgiven if Yahoo fixes this most serious omission.
It's ridiculous that Y!M comes with video but no voice. We Mac users are still forced to live in the Dark Ages...

iChat is about the best videoconference software for the Mac. The audio is adaptive filtered, so even though the speakers and the mic are right next to each other, there is not feedback. It's great.
The frame-rate of the video is much better than skype too. I have a weekly video chat to collaborators in the states once a week. There are three US sites and me on my broadband at home - iChat never seems to drop a frame.
