Hehe .. pre intel .. I still can't bring myself to say the word .. I N T E L ... it's like I need a shower
(Although I lust over a new Mac Pro every time I see one).
OS X.5 has some glitches that I wish they'd sort out. Mind you most of my glitches still seem to be caused by the fact that when I installed it I imported all of my crap over from 10.4. Which was a good idea but it did bring a whole load of problems with it. I think when I get time I'll begin afresh. But you know what it's like .. when you dread having to install the 18 million applications you can't live without .. and then there's all the registering .. and passwords .. e-mail .. URL's and all the other stuff that you have to keep a track of.
Biggest glitches I've noticed on X.5 are:
1. Text Edit doesn't want to open when I double click a text file. Have to right click and use the "open with" function.
2. Some applications like to crash often .. like the Epson R220 Printer app (man that thing needs a kick in the arse).
3. Sometimes when playing World of Warcraft the system preferences seem to totally forget my Expose buttons (F9,F10, and F11) and it totally reassigns them ... to nothing .. so they don't work until I manually put them back on.
4. DVD player can screw me around a lot
5. Now and again the audio system really isn't reliable with my Pro apps and iTunes. So for instance one should be able to be creating a song in Logic .. and be ale to turn on iTunes to play something without the Audio system going nuts (usually is opens two streams of the exact same audio which means you get seriously bad phasing .... makes it sound 'orrible).
6. The CAF audio format is really delicate at the moment. IF you're bouncing audio to CAF format don't try to open anything with audio (iTunes etc), cos it seems to disrupt the CAF stream and it causes some serious problems later (Namely .. you get no sound at all
)
Admittedly only Pro music or Sound people are going to use the CAF format (Core Audio Format ... it's a 64 bit system .. very high quality). But it's annoying that Apple haven't gotten a little more robustness into the OS X system yet.
7. More crashes and relaunches than ever before (Although I say that its still NOTHING when compared with my PC, which needs rebooting after you so much as type an e-mail), and that' quite annoying cos the OS X system is itself quite stable but they do seem to still have some quirks to iron out.
8. iMovie 5 and iDVD 5 just plainly don't work in Leopard. Well I can use iMovie 5 sure .. but you can't send what you've done to anything else once it's done. iDVD simply won't work at all. Now I know what you're saying ... upgrade you fool .. UPGRADE!!! And I would if I had some money to do it with. But I was fairly happy with iMovie 5. Fortunately a work around for this is to start up 10.4 and use it in that .. which I do. Yeah ... I'm buying Final Cut Express soon anyways.
9. Front Row has some 'serious' issues at times. Not least of all is that the screen saver is set to start .. whether you want it or not .. after about 30 seconds of it starting. You have to disable the screen saver totally before doing anything. This is just plain dumb
10. Logic graphics don't update properly. THis is REAL annoying. Cos when you open the Matrix editor (Piano roll to you noobs
), and try to click on a midi note to move it, your actually clicking the wrong position .. and you have to do some rapid window resizing for it all to snap back into place so you can actually see where they should be.
Well there you go .. my top 10 OS X.5 niggles. Saying all this it's still a damned good system to use and although these problems annoy me I do work around them and for the most part the system is solid. And I would say most of my problems are caused by the transfer of data that I did to begin with. It does work nicely with my 'Pre Intel' system and I'm using my system for professional music making and film editing.
Though I'm pissed about Classic disappearing .. how the bloody hell do I play Tombraider now??? (Fortunately I have 10.4 on the other HD so I can boot up on that .. but it would be nice to still be able to play all my older games in one system).
