My Dad has an iPod Nano, loaded up with all his music, and he had iTunes on the old laptop, which has died. It's the hard drive which is the problem, so there is no way or getting that music back. We have got a new laptop today, and he obviously wants to put his iPod onto it, but what will happen if he plugs his loaded iPod into a blank iTunes? Will it erase the iPod (because of a blank iTunes Library) or transfer all files from the iPod onto the computer so it will be like to old laptop? I assume it works the same with the Mac, so can anyone help?

There is also another little issue that I need some help with... The computer is set into three user accounts, one Administrator and two limited access accounts. The Limited ones are for my Dad and brother. Both accounts will need iTunes on them, for use with two separate iPods, but I don't know if I will be able to make the two iTunes libraries separate so they sync to the correct iPod when connected. Did that make sense?

For OS X there's a program called senuti (iTunes backwards) that allows you to load up the tunes from an iPod to an iTunes library. I presume two separate accounts have separate libraries, even in the dark side but I dint know for certain

@alex, the old laptop hard drive no longer boots? That does not mean that it can't be read. Remove HD from old laptop, get an external usb HD case to put it in then connect it to new laptop and hopefully transfer across to new laptop. PC Laptop HD's are usually much easier to get to than on our Mac Laptops.

^We tried that with a Desktop PC using a USB, it didn't work at all.

No two cases will be the same, with a hard drive, if the control electronics fail then it won't boot or be readable. If the boot sector is screwed it won't boot but can be read. The only other state is fully functional.

Is it correct to assume: Admin account not used by anyone One limited account is used by your Dad (who has a single iPod) Other limited account is used by your brother (who also has a single iPod)?

This has all been resolved, in as good a way that Windows can manage. We just had to clean both iPods and restart. Good thing that nobody had any bought songs off iTunes... Anyway, all done now.

Did that make sense? I set up a multi-user system similar to this for a friend. Separate itunes libraries, itunes accounts and ipods were used and all worked fine. We did, however, find that we couldn't run itunes on both windows accounts simultaneously (using fast user switching) - we had to ensure iTunes was closed before switching to the other user and loading it up. So should be fine for you, even if you have a single itunes account run from both windows accounts I think.

(That was probably back around iTunes 8 though.)

Yeah, it's now running iTunes 9... I'm not going to update yet because it's slow enough on Windows, and I don't want to risk 'clogging the tubes' so to speak.

My wife's iPod Nano syncs quite happily with my iMac and my iPod Touch. She has her selection of stuff, and I have mine and there isn't much overlap in our tastes. When I plug her iPod into iTunes, it recognises her machine and works with a totally different set of preferences.
I think that, in principle, up to three diffferent devices can syn with iTnes - and they can all have different setups and not overlap.
