I have recently bought a Macbook. I also have a DVI to composite cable that lets me use it as a dvd player for my TV.
Is there a way to use it this way, using Front Row and the remote control but with the lid closed?
I would be cool if I could but at the moment I can't see a way that it can be done.

If the TV is plugged into the mac, it shouldn't go to sleep. If it does, just hit a button on remote (or mouse). I know you can use the laptop with the screen down using a second monitor - I have done this before. Never used the remote with the lid down, but I assume it should work?!?

Make sure the power cable is connected as well. In the "old" days, the PowerBook could operate in this "clamshell" mode whereas the iBook could not. Not sure if this is now the case with MacBook and MacBook Pro?

Barry and Gavin. Thanks for your input. I have now had chance to try out your suggestions. (I have been a bit busy just lately to watch dvds) I can now report that the Macbook does work in clamshell mode. When the DVI lead is put in and the lid closed the MB sleeps. However if you plug in an external mouse and click it then it does indeed wake up. More to the point you can also wake it with the remote. HOWEVER the is about a ten second delay before it wakes up when you use the remote in this way. It was this that was throwing me. I had not previously been patient enough So now I have a nice streamlined DVD player whenever I want one, I don't need an external mouse and I have a nice Front Row front end to give me access to my media. I am a happy cat. CC

theres always this app mr cat www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22211 insomniax DESCRIPTION InsomniaX disables the sleep mode on a Apple Laptop allowing you to play music through speakers while it's closed. Also adds the option to enable hibernation mode.
