Finally, I have been converted to the pro-iPad supporters. I never used to be able to see the point in them, and always thought people should just get a laptop instead because they do more. Until today! I was in Phones4U and they had an iPad 2 on display. Being the university science student, I was interested in an app called 'Molecules'. I loaded it up and was very impressed. Later, in a lecture I spoke to 'that guy' who sits with his iPad and types out notes during the lecture. He told me he downloads the powerpoint presentations and can annotate them as you can with paper and a pen. Gave me a quick demo and then said he also typed out our last 3000-word lab report on it. So my predicament is this, now: In September, I was fully looking to get a MacBook/MBP. Now maybe I could get an iPad instead. For what I would use a MacBook for, an iPad is a good substitute (Internet, typing, emails etc, usual student-stuff ) Plus it has all these science apps I never even knew existed, so those will come in handy. How did I overlook it to begin with? So I need some advice. MacBook or iPad? Edit: I realise both devices make me look like a dick. I don't like people who I see with an iPad/MacBook, ESPECIALLY if they are sitting in Starbucks. I don't like being the poseur, but you know, I'm hardly going to get a Dell Streak, am I? Edit II: The more I think about it, the more appealing an iPad becomes. If I get a 3G one, do I have to have a contract with it? Similar to a phone but it's data-only? I go a lot of places with no Wi-Fi so 3G would be useful, but a contract is not really a nice sounding plan.

Dont get the 3g version, always go for wi-fi and use a mi-fi dongle, you can get these on pay as you go and can connect upto 5 devices to it

^How do I go about that? How reasonable are the PAYG dongles? I looked up on the O2 site and they are offering 1GB for just over £10 a month, which I wasn't particularly happy about... I've never even heard of Mi-Fi dongles... Are they just the same as regular ones?
Another iPad question: Can I plug USBs into it via an adapter? I'd like to be able to put documents onto it that way but if I can't I can always use my Dropbox folder. I'd mainly be using it for uni work so Word/Pages/Excel/Numbers filees are a must.

I'd mainly be using it for uni work so Word/Pages/Excel/Numbers filees are a must. a mi-fi dongle is similar to a normal 3g dongle, however it doesnt connect via usb as it creates a mobile wi-fi network take a look at clicky you can connect upto 5 devices to the mi-fi network. Prices are generally the same across all providers, but if you think you will be using a lot of data then perhaps a contract will be best. you cant connect usb devices to transfer files, it all has to be done through iTunes or external services like dropbox, There is a system that allows you to upload your iWork documents from your iPad to your dropbox account using the webdav standard clicky there is also a system where you can generate an email address for your dropbox account and you can email files to it clicky. *Update* I have just read your blog and discovered that you are not a fan of the 3 network, personally don't have any problems myself however you can unlock these i-fi dongles and use any providers network and data, you will just need to get a sim card from them. Like how you are using clicky in your blog posts too.

^Thanks for the advice. I'd rather not use 3 at all, really bad experience with the signal. (Customer service was brilliant though) The 1-month contracts seem the best option, as most of the time I will be able to wait until I'm back in a Wi-Fi zone. It's just that if I go away to a cottage for a week or so (as I do a few times a year) then buying a one-month thing would work well. I'm on O2 SIMplicity now and have had no rea problems with signal, however I expect that Vodafone are/were still lots better. (I used to be with Vodafone before the 3 Mobile contract, I only moved to O2 because I expect to get an iPhone with them, my friend can get me a discount )

Back on the iPad thing.... I think I'm back to wanting a MacBook. They do more, I can type on them easier and will be more useful overall I think. Also, if I get an iPhone in the Summer as I intend to, I'll have hardly any use for an iPad.
