For some reason my ipod video and my wife's nano (both last model not the latest) keep ejecting from my mac for no reason. The nano is the worst it ejects itself less than a minute from plugging it in. My ipod video it's usually 5 minutes
I'd get up in the morning to find my ipod had ejected during the night and the battery was dead as when the ipod ejects it remains on so the battery drains, now i can't even trust to leave the ipods on at all, i just update and then charge them via a socket
I've reinstalled both ipods but no change
any ideas would be gratefully received

This has confused me.
I presume that when you say "eject" you mean that the iPod "unmounts" i.e. it's icon no longer appears on the desktop.
Even when the icon is not visible it should still be charging. Is the backlight on the iPod on? If so you should be able to disable this under the iPod settings menu. Anything other than backlight always on should sort it.
As to the iPod unmounting mine does the same from time to time. Out of interest are you connecting your iPod directly to the Mac or are you using a hub?

Yeah, i mean unmount
Both ipods unmount and when we get up in the morning the ipods have unmounted and the ipod icon has gone and the batteries are dead and i have to recharge via a wallsocket. Now that we don't leave them attached to the mac overnight we don't get that problem but now when i mount the ipod to update etc after about 5 minutes for the ipod and 1 minute for the nano they both unmount
I used to plug them into a hub but now do it direct into the usb ports on the mac but it still does it
this used to be a problem like your that was time to time but it's getting really bad now especially the nano, sometimes when you try and put tracks onto it it will unmount half way through updating
the backlights on both ipods are set to go off after 2 seconds

Very strange
Do the iPods hold charge well when they have been charged up via your charger?

yep no problems whatsoever,it almost like the ipod unmounts and then sits there with the menu on all the time but no charge goes to the ipod and they drain down
if it was just one ipod them i'd suspect that but not with two separate units

We can assume that the iPods are o.k. if you have re-set them and it still happens. Also if they work from your charger.
So by process of elimination it must be.
a) A problem with the dock/lead used to charge it. b) A problem with the usb port that you are plugging into. c) a problem with iTunes/Your installation of OS X
As you should have a spare charging lead, try swapping it over.
As you have more than one usb port try another one.
If still no joy report back.

I've noticed this with my iPod as well.
It didn't happen with Tiger (not that I remember anyway), but since I upgraded to Leopard, I plug in my iPod, it syncs then drops off the "map".
I now have the iPod connected to the Mac via a powered USB hub which charges it.
I don't think this is Leopard that has caused the problem - it's either an iTunes update or possibly an iPod firmware update - the problem is I can't date when it began to happen so I don't know where to roll back to.

There are several possible causes (that I know of) for the sort of problems being described and it may well be that more than one of these causes are combining together...... It could well be a combination of: - iTunes and iPod autosync settings being responsible for the devices getting unmounted from the computer.
- the computer going into a sleep / hibernation mode overnight being responsible for the devices not charging up despite being attached to the USB port.
If you can answer a few questions then it might help to start pinning down the possible cause(s): 1) What operating system(s) are your computer(s) running? 2) What version(s) of iTunes have you got? 3) Do the iPod(s) manage to sync correctly with iTunes on the computer(s) after being connected and before unmounting (ie do they update podcasts, songs and videos)?

I don't know about CornishWomble's setup, but mine is the latest version of iTunes (whatever that is) and OS X Leopard with all the updates applied.
The iPod (80Gb) also has all the updates applied.
I thought it might have been a click box in iTunes (can't quite rememebr which one as I'm at work on a PC and the Mac is at home), but I've tried experimenting with them all and no change.
It's a minor irritation as everything syncs OK (music, video, photographs, contacts, calendar etc), but after a sync, the iPod just goes away.
If I click Sync again on iTunes it's still there ... ah! I have just remembered, due to over 40Gb of music on the iPod, I disabled the "use iPod as disk drive option" - I'll bet that's why it disappears from the desktop!
I might need to look at the power saving options on the Mac as to why the iPod drops off charge as well!
Please ignore this, any previous and subsequent posts from me on this matter as they will only server to label me as the resident forum idiot!

Hi
Been away on holiday hence late response
I have tried a different USB lead and that seems to have made a difference, it hasn't happened since. Also not as bad with my wife's nano
However looking at the above posts I do think there is a glitch somewhere that isn't just the lead (especially as it has happened now and then with the new lead)
It does happen more often overnight when the Mac's screen goes off, i never switch off the mac or put it to sleep but think their might be something in that

My iPod started showing this "self ejecting" behaviour more and more frequently. I have solved the problem now though. In my case it was definitely the lead that was at fault. I bought a cheap "pattern" lead off of Ebay and the problem has instantly disappeared. CC

Yep, it was definately the lead in my case as well, I've not had any problems since I chucked the old one away
