Hi there - I have run Disc Utility and my hard disc apparently needs repair. I then booted from the original start up disc and ran Disc utility again. Still there is a volume which needs to be repaired. Please could someone give me some advice on this or is it a case of having to buy a Disc Repair programme such as Disc Warrior to do the job?
Any advice is much appreciated!

By the way - the machine is an iMac G5 without the intel processor. (about 3 years old).

I am no expert but if you have not yet done so BACK UP urgently.
As for Disk Warrior I can vouch for it. It is a one trick pony but it does that one trick marvellously. In your position that is the tool I would try first. The new version works on Intel and Leopard too. So you can keep it around for a few years for your new machines when they arrive.

Thanks CC! I'll give it a go & give a mini review of it. I am in that lucky position to TRULY give an idiot's guide!

Just a note of caution
I have gone through two HDDs in my iMac G5 in the last two years. Total failure each time. If your Mac is reporting a HDD that is dying it might just be true.
All the best
