I didn't _need_ one, of course, but made an impulse buy whilst in the states this week. It worked out about £40 cheaper (though I was in a State with various taxes) and the little US USB power adapter was a cute alternative for me (I have so many UK adapters now).
Restored from the original iPad iCloud backup (whilst still in the states) - so setup was a snap.
Whilst not quite retina, the smaller screen with the same resolution is really nice - it looks good.
... and the best bit ... it fits in my coat pocket.
I'll bring it along to the to xmas bash in case you want to have a look.

That sounds great.
I have not yet found a use for an iPad. Maybe you will come up with one so I can justify the purchase.
;D

Catching up on Strictly when on the move, using the iPlayer app; which supports downloads now.

Reason #2: Remote control of your various Macs (and PCs) when out and about. Using Jump, or logmein (ignition), or iSSH.

I hate to mention it, but what's wrong with the Kindle Fire HD at £159 as an alternative to the iPad Mini?

Yes it's another option I guess, but you still need a lovely small pocket device to use when going back to your mac of course.

I hate to mention it, but what's wrong with the Kindle Fire HD at £159 as an alternative to the iPad Mini? Possibly nothing - I haven't used one. Though I think the main advantage for anyone who has already bought into the iOS apps ecosystem is that you already own them from previous devices and you can just start using them on the new one - the mini in this case. I mentioned this previously, but I was able to restore from an iPad (maxi) iCloud backup whilst I was still in the states too. All applications, data and even the app state was restored overnight - very very slick.

I have bought one iPad for a trial project at work and before I handed it over to the nurse who was going to be using it I did have opportunity to have a little play and have to say I thought it was a lovely bit of kit. I would like one at some point and suspect I will be tempted to drop the cash to buy one in the new year.
I have had a little look at the Nexus 7 and whilst it is equally slick bit of kit I am not really drawn to it, mainly due to my existing investment in iOS apps. Plus I have to say as fancy as Android is it is very definitly not as intuitive as iOS.

Android worries me. The massive surge in malware as the platform grows is worrying. Techcrunch article

I am inclined to agree about Android. I have an Android phone (couldn't justify the cost of an iPhone) and generally hate it! Intuitive it certainly is not and of course Mr Cat's point about malware is correct.
