Does anyone know a free app. to disable the Mac start-up chime? So far i've found one that costs a little over £10.00 and quite frankly i'd rather stick my fingers in my ears.
I realise that muting your Mac before turning it off works but it's not an elegant solution.I also hear that if there's something wrong with your start up disk the start up "chime" is replaced by the sound of breaking glass.
My main objections to the chime are it's volume (if it was left on full blast last time you shut down) And the sound itself...It always sounds flat, like the machine is tired or something. I suspect it is pitched somewhere between two notes, but haven't tested it yet. No guitar tuner handy!
Thanks in advance and apologies if anyone's posted a similar question elsewhere :o

Just to make you aware that the startup chime can be used as a diagnostic tool in the event that your Mac should develop a problem. In certain cases the chime changes and these changes can be used to help make it well again. Disabling that could make things considerably more difficult to diagnose.

Indeed - the IT department put me some new memory into my MBP on Friday. When I turned it on, I got a 'fire alarm' instead of the comforting flat chime. They'd left it wobbling about and the computer didn't like it. Another quick wiggle and all was well, but the fire alarm served the useful purpose of convincing IT that I wasn't a winging Mac User and that they really had messed up my machine. Incidentally, I now have 4Gb of RAM. It isn't so long since I had a Mac with a 4Gb hard drive! Makes you think, doesn't it?
