I would like to be able to convert AIFF files into mp3 format so that I can pass them to others in a nice compressed format. Does the Mac have this ability? If not natively which software would folk recommend that I use?

You could try Switch www.nch.com.au/switch/ which does this. There is a limited use free version. Alternatively Quicktime pro will open AIFF files which you could then export to WAV which you could then use iTunes to convert to mp3 ( bit round the houses I know... )

I will look into this.
Basically I want to be able to send small (compressed) music files to folk like Will without overloading the Email system. I don't do it often and I am wondering if this is the best way to do it.
Thanks for the help.

If you want to edit audio files and convert from formats then you can do it with Audacity or there's an application on the Apple site called Max which is just an audio format converter. I use both.

I never did like Audacity. The learning curve seemed too steep for me. Max on the other hand seems like a really good idea. I will give it a look Cheers buddy.

I always use Garage Band when ever I want to do anything like this. It's free.

Doesn't iTunes let you convert to mp3? Much to my surprise, yes it does. Cheers.
