I fear Al Murray suffers from the same problem as Alf Garnett - ie, the creators think they're doing satire, but the Daily Mail-reading British public take him at face value.

Cheers to the beer! All hail to the ale! And welcome to the wine ... for the laydeez. Al Murray must be a British icon. He’s an indicator of a deeper problem - the xenophobic British Disease. Hardly something to celebrate. If he ha d a wider palette of characters to demonstrate a range, I’d be more inclined to agree, but being just the Pub Landlord won’t cut it for me. Heaven forbid he becomes the next Doctor.

If you check out Mr Murray's Wikipedia entry, you will find he's well-educated and of good high class breeding stock.* His act, as the slightly inebriated xenophobic landlord, is extremely subtle satire of the highest order.
*Usual Wikipedia disclaimers apply, ie it may be a put-up job.

I'll raise one to the Pub Landlord with you Heather. Never thought for a minute anyone might take him at face value
