How about John Arlott as a British icon? I may have suggested him before to Will via email but maybe not. What do you say people? For me he is the voice of cricket: More than that I'd say he's probably the greatest commentator of any sport ever ( and I'm a football fan) His voice, his power of description . He was and is The Daddy. Come on Will!

As I lean back wistfully on the top deck of the red 219 omnibus as it thunders past the verdant pastures of Old Trafford, I can't help but muse on your perceptiveness, Jeremy. Did you know that he also wrote a well-known harvest hymn? "God, whose farm is all creation" - 612 in Rejoice and Sing/ 179 in Hymns Old and New. And I must admit, for anyone who knows Manchester that not only is the 219 not red (and never has been, even in Arlott's day it was orange), it would have to be seriously lost to pass Old Trafford. But somehow, in Arlott's tone's buses would always be red!
