My MacBook (2 years or so old) has suddenly developed a crack in the top surface of the keyboard just above the "sleep" light. It seems that the plastic material is very thin at this point and is subjected to stress by a "lug" on the lid that strikes this point whenever the screen is closed. As a matter of interest most of the time my MacBook is left open on the desk and closed quite infrequently.
Although I have not seen any reference to the problem here there are dozens of complaints (including photographs) about exactly the same problem on various Apple forums.
I have no doubt the case will be replaced by Apple, based on experiences related on other forums and the fact that my Apple care is still valid. It seems a shame that Apple have not seen fit to provide a modification to solve the problem. After the case is replaced I am planning to fit some self adhesive feet (from Maplins) to the lid adjacent to the offending "lugs" to cushion the impact when the lid is closed.
It would be interesting to hear of others members experience with this problem and how they have resolved it.

My MacBook had the same issue. Apple replaced it without fuss. In fact they replaced the bottom case at the same time as I was seeing hairline cracks in the plastic. As I understand it the replacement parts do not suffer with the same problem. I have never heard of a casing having to be replaced twice. Maybe it was a bad batch of plastic that got through QA

My MacBook case is being replaced while I wait by Microspot Computers in Maidstone, thanks to AppleCare. For the benefit of anyone in the Maidstone area I can thoroughly recommend Microspot. Coffee and free use of the internet while I wait - good service.
