Over the past year my Late 2007 Black MacBook has developed two faults. One with USB devices losing connection and another with dual layer DVDs not reading/burning. So I took a trip to Apple retail at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol and was told that both my superdrive and logic board had to be replaced. Alex the attractive girl Genius told me that they don't have any logic boards in stock for my model and that they will have to order it in. So after returning home i decided to check to see how much it would cost if i hadn't taken out the AppleCare and the price seems to be between £475 for refurbished parts and £950 for all new parts if i decided to repair it myself. So now after seeing the costs i am very happy with the £199 i spent on the AppleCare and am looking forward to seeing Alex again to have my MacBook repaired soon.

I've never had good experiences with apple care, my credit card insurance cost my £99 for a full replacement and included theft so glad to hear some people are getting their moneys worth out of it : )

i am very happy with the £199 i spent on the AppleCare That is the cost for extending cover to three years (the first year being free) I presume. I have never extended applecare for the extra two years though I am told you can buy it quite cheaply on Ebay or even at Amazon. I have however used it in the first year and have been delighted. Glad your extended cover worked for you.

with my previous experience of laptop computers and knowing the stresses they are put under i thought it was a small price to pay for peace of mind and it also covered my faulty airport router i bought at the same time
[Update] Alex from the Genius bar just called to let me know that the parts are in for my repair and i should be dropping into the store on Thursday morning for a same-day repair

[Update#2] Just got back from the apple store with a new Superdrive and a new logic board which is actually faulty and although it kind of shows the battery it does not boot from battery so it now needs to be plugged in to boot. Also whilst they were replacing the faulty logic board with one with a worse problem they also broke the speaker cable to the left speaker so now i have just one speaker. So now they have ordered another logic board and a speaker and i shall be making the trip back to Bristol again

Finally got the chance to visit the Genius bar again to fix my battery and speaker issues. The speaker was replaced and the battery was tested and they found that faulty and not the logic board. So they replaced the battery and not the logic board. But it seems that the problem is with the logic board and not the battery as it is still faulty. So I've got yet another appointment tomorrow to see if they can fix it again

So I've got yet another appointment tomorrow to see if they can fix it again It has to be worth suggesting that a full replacement of the machine might be a cost effective solution for both of you.

If it is not fixed (and of course it probably is) I would press hard for this next time.
