Hi
I went out today to buy an Airport Extreme as my partner and I have a mixture of Mac and PC components. Upshot is, the nice man in the Mac shop advised I buy a Time Capsule...something I had planned to do anyway but as I'm a 'gimp' was going to do it later - the nice man just saved me £148.00! Result!
Now. Here is the question. Can I use Time Capsule as an absolute 'storage' device or just as a backup device, or both?
I'm not a great one for reading the destructions pamphlets that come with these things (and TM comes with loads) so any advice would be a bloody Godsend!
Regards

You can use it as both. HOWEVER. If you use it with Time Machine then over time Time Machine will consume the whole drive. I use mine just for backing up my laptop via Time Machine but I have been toying with the idea of making it into an iTunes server instead.

Thanks FC. So does that mean I just send files over the network (copy) and can I set up folders on TM?

Any computer in you house will then have access to those files and folders. Plug a printer in and any computer in the house will have access to that printer too. If I were you I would use it as storage OR as a Time Machine backup not both at the same time. If you want to do storage AND backup at the same time you can but it needs a little more thought.

Excellent. Thanks very much. Just read up and it appears I can use a USB hub to attach my external drives too so TM will remain just what it is and my other drives can be storage. I just love it when things work out!

I just love it when things work out! If you are going to add a hub to the usb port on the Time Capsule so that you can attach more than one HDD or printer please give feedback. Early versions of the Time Capsule did not support this though some people found that they could do it anyway. I heard reports of "issues" when this was attempted. Now that was years ago and there has been a host of upgrades both in software and hardware since then. When you get all of you system up and working please let us know how you got on.
