Hi everyone, Recently I've been saving up for a MBP 15 inch for school and general stuff obviously as well. SO, their are three debates in my mind - whether to get the dedicated graphics, and whether to get apple care or not... also, I'm at senior school - does that count as FE (further education) with apple? - It shows that on their UK edu store. Also, my mum being a teacher, will that get me a better discount? Here are the various prices (with the basic school discount): 15-inch without dedicated graphics (2.53Ghz) - wihtout applecare: £1,247.85 incl. VAT 15-inch without dedicated graphics (2.53Ghz) - WITH applecare: £1,479.33 incl. VAT 15-inch with dedicated graphics (2.66 GHz) wihtout applecare: £1,408.83 incl. VAT 15-inch with dedicated graphics and applecare: £1,640.30 incl. VAT - ouch! SO, what should I get? I would very much have a use for the dedicated graphics, as I will be using it for after effects/FCE video rendering and some other graphics intensive stuff, but not sure about applecare. And would I get a discount for my mum being a teacher, or would being at senior school qualify for FE discount? - I'm not at the place obviously now because its the holidays, but is there another way to access that store? If you could answer me questions I would be very happy Thanks, Alex

Not knowing the answer to this I phoned Apple. You are not eligible for discount. However your teacher mother would be. They would not tell me what percentage discount that she would be offered as apparently it changes school to school. To get the discount she would have to send them proof of employment. She can phone them up on 0800 072 1154 to get more information. Hope this helps. p.s. Don't forget to keep an eye on the refurb store. store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTM3NTA4NDU

My friend's Dad works at Newcastle Uni, and he got his 13'' MBP in September last year, just after Snow Leopard was released. He used his Dad's FE discount, and also used the Students Offer that's on every September and got a free iPod Classic. (He could have had a Touch/Nano but wanted the space) He ended up getting I think 27.5% off and £150 rebate for an iPod of his choice, which he got engraved from the Apple Store. I think that will be the best deal.

Yeah, I think you'd still get a pretty good discount. I don't follow the laptops/MacBooks line. I think I'll always prefer a Desktop iMac or maybe a Mac Mini, so I don't know when/if they'll be getting an upgrade this year.

At the risk of dashing hopes - I don't think 27% is typical! My wife is a teacher and the discount usually ends up being around 9% - but still worth having. If you are in FE or HE, Apple will only take the order if you go online via your college network. That way they can check your bona fides. Everyone else - such as your Mum, I suspect, has to put up with the standard discount.

Also for a load of discounts on software like MS Office for Mac etc., go to www.software4students.co.uk/ and sign up using your school. I used it for Office. I think that site's owned by Microsoft anyway, so the MS Software is the cheapest.
