Today I went into an O2 shop, and asked one of the guys about one of their current SIM Card deals, where if I top-up £10 per month, I will get 300 free texts and Unlimited Internet. I thought I would be able to buy this SIM and then get a cheap/used unlocked iPhone from eBay or something, but the guy said I can't do that because the iPhone has to use an 'iPhone-only SIM'. I left, convinced that he'd lied to me or misunderstood the question, so does anyone here know if I can use a regular SIM on an unlocked iPhone?
It seems silly if I can't.

i don't think there's a specific iPhone Sim card probably one that's pre-configured for the data network and visual voice mail systems i use a virgin Sim (£5=1GB data per month) in my (apple unlocked) 3G no problems EDIT: have a think about these guys giffgaff.com/index/pricing they use the o2 network and charge £10/month for unlimited texts & internet with 100 mins i haven't tried them yet because I'm still using up the credit on my virgin Sim

Well, what is the point in advertising 'unlocked iPhones' if you still need to use an O2 SIM on them? That isn't exactly 'unlocked' is it? I'm pretty certain I could buy an iPhone and use my current old Vodafone SIM which I've had since about 2001. I wouldn't get any 3G, but I could still use it as a normal phone.
I might go into a different O2 shop or even the Apple Store to see what they say. If any other networks do a Pay as you Go with unlimited internet bonus I'd like to know, because I can ask them as well.
But on the other hand, I can see why an O2 iPhone-only SIM would exist, because then what is the point of the £30 a month tariff?

As for the above O2 shop link, this is the one I mean:
Key benefits: Top-up £10–£14 and get 300 texts and unlimited internet Top-up £15–£29 and get 500 texts and unlimited internet Top-up £30+ and get unlimited texts and unlimited internet Charges outside your allowance: UK standard fixed lines and O2 mobiles5 25p/min for first 3 mins then 5p/min for rest of day Voicemail 15p per call Other UK network mobiles 25p per minute UK video calls6 50p per minute UK text message 10p per message International text message7 20p per message UK picture messages8 25p per message UK browsing9 £3 per MB Telephone Customer Service10 25p per call from an O2 mobile Calls to 05, 080 and 082 numbers 15p per minute Calls to 0871 numbers 35p per minute Calls to 07744, 07755, 0845, 0844 and 0870 numbers 25p per minute 5. UK standard fixed lines and O2 mobiles Standard call rates apply to voice calls made in the UK to standard UK fixed line numbers (starting 01, 02 or 03). 6. UK video calls Video calls are only available on compatible 3G phones. Please check individual handset specifications for details on which phones have this feature. 7. International text message Texts sent from the UK to another country. 8. UK picture messages Picture messaging phone required. 9. UK browsing Can be used for either O2 Active or i-mode®. Applies to use in the UK only. Handset dependent. 10. Telephone Customer Service Calls to Customer Service from a landline are charged at national rate of your fixed line service provider.
I can't see anything in the small print about this not working on an iPhone, apart from maybe point No. 9 where it says 'handset dependant', but that could just mean the phone must be able to browse the web to be eligible for this.

Well, I've got an old 1st Gen iphone which I used variously with Virgin and Vodafone (probably others as well, in the last 3 years). No, I never used (or wanted) visual voicemail, but everything (including WiFi) worked perfectly.
But I've over-bricked it (I bought it in the US and had to unlock/jailbreak it). The last upgrade defeated me, so it sits on the desk, pristine but useless. If anyone else wants to try with it, we can talk (cheap) terms. I'm waiting for the next model and suffering with a Nokia E72 in the meantime.
