Hi A friend is in great trouble trying to connect his new iMac using Snow Leopard to the internet via Pipex and a Netgear 834 Router. We spent ages on the phone to Pipex who talked him through the settings for the Router, the router and the computer were restarted. Connection was initially via an ethernet cable. All appeared to be well except that he is unable to connect to the internet. Pipex eventually gave up! He then spoke to a helpful chap at Apple who went through the computer settings and these were confirmed to be OK. Still no luck. Oh, and by the way an alternative ethernet cable was tried too. Ultimately he would prefer to connect wirelessly. The router/internet connection was working OK yesterday using his old PC. Any suggestions would be very welcome indeed.

There should be no issues with the Mac/Netgear combo as this is a common setup.
The question is, does the router claim to be connected to the internet? You can tell this quite easily from the status page. If it does, then there's a 98% chance you have some kind of DNS issues.
I'm not familiar with Pipex's DNS settings having left them a long time ago but they should be able to tell you.
Click on Network in the System Preferences panel. On the left hand side you'll see details of the different connections. Ethernet and Airport need to be configured with the DNS settings from Pipex. A quick Google search will give you plenty of screenshots of how to do this.
HTH.

A very long time ago, I had a business account with Pipex for about 2 weeks. Despite our promise to pay them hundreds of pounds, their customer support were unable to provide us with a working connection for even 30 seconds. We found them to be unhelpful in the extreme - and this was on an office full of PCs! So we rapidly gave up and moved our account elsewhere. Sorry not to be more encouraging.

Thanks for advice/comments. We got there in the end - it may have been our use of the word extreme instead of xtreme as Pipex insist! Not really sure, but after that change and several resets and restarts all is now well.
Personally I am very happy with BT as my ISP, setting up my hub and several others for friends has been no trouble at all. Perhaps I have been lucky. I was with Pipex several years ago and wasn't all that happy with their support service.

Just to add info, Zen internet service is THE most Mac friendly, their help is superb and their service overall wins time and time again in comparison sites.

Hi A friend is in great trouble trying to connect his new iMac using Snow Leopard to the internet via Pipex and a Netgear 834 Router. That's exactly my setup lol Pipex has served me pretty well for years and years. Never had a problem with the router/computers. Only problem we've had was when bt was upgrading the exchange and we were cut off for nearly a week
