(Note this is not available yet, unless you have developer access)
The whole process took several hours (though the first step of downloading using my poor broadband may not be as bad for others. Only about 400MB in all).
So, downloaded iTunes 9.2 and the new firmware. (The firmware is now at "Golden Master" status - essentially the final release.)
I installed iTunes. The library is upgraded as usual, and took quite a while. Though in my case I have the libary on a network share, so that wouldn't have helped.
Then I installed the new firmware. There's a trick; to load a specific firmware click restore in iTunes, with the Option key held down - this permits you to select a specific firmware file. I don't think this will be needed once we get to the public release.
The firmware is installed, and several iPhones reboots later you have to set up the device using an earlier backup to get your settings back (rather than a new device as was the case the very first time is was set up, of course). Another reboot and then all the apps and media are put back on ... again quite time-consuming, depending how much material you have.
Everything is fine. You seem to have to re-approve push events and apps that want to know your location.
It's good to have pseudo-multitasking now on my existing apps, and I've made use of the new folders. Unified inbox is noted, though not sure how much use I'll make of it personally.
I just seem to have odd behaviour with one app, so that may need more attention, but everything else I've tried seems to work a treat.

I'm tempted too. I have developer access but I haven't yet had time to download iOS4.
I've heard that iOS4 on an iPhone 3 GS INCREASES battery life. Have you noticed any effect?
Alan.

So do you both pay the $99 a year fee?
If so what other benefits do u get aside from downloading early versions of the ios.
Are either of you developing apps?

Yes, $99 per year, but in my case I use a friend's account. (That's not illegal or anything, you can have teams and grant access to manage development devices and deploy apps to them.)
The main reason is that you need a dev account in order to deploy and applications you've developed onto a hardware device. You don't need an account to develop just for the software emulator. (I've just written a couple of small apps for personal use.)
I haven't noticed any effect on battery life yet, purely because it hasn't been upgraded long enough.

What apps have you wrote?
I was attempting to write an app myself, it is much harder than I thought.

One jumps to some specific websites I use for work, using webkit in the background, and another is my CV in multimedia format(!) Just playing to learn a few things.

I just successfully installed the official release of iOS 4 from iTunes onto my iPhone 3GS.
It's looking good so far.

I've just installed too.
Not sure about wallpaper.
Like the email inbox
And I'll reserve judgement on folders (can see me forgetting apps now I can't see them)

Yes, I changed the wallpaper within minutes. It now has smart grey pinstripe to match its big brother iPad.

Guess I'm Going to have to get an iPhone 4 now Now? Get in the queue mate their is a bit of a wait you know. I am still in two minds about the iPhone 4. The iPhone 3 was so special I don't know if the 4 will be a bit of an anti-climax
