There seem to be a lot of reports of problems for folk who have updated their iPhone 3G to iOS4. Personally, despite wanting to try out iBooks, I am going to wait a while for fixes to appear. There are also a number of apps - including my beloved Runkeeper - which are still waiting for their iOS4 upgrades to be approved by Apple. Again, if you are dependent on a particular app, make sure that it is compatible first.

I am very wary of x.0 releases of anything. Is it just the 3G or does the 3GS also have problems?

i haven't seen anything reported. My upgrade (documented elsewhere in the forum) went ok on the 3GS, though as it was pre-release it used the backup and restore method, which takes forever.

I am very wary of x.0 releases of anything. Is it just the 3G or does the 3GS also have problems? My 3GS ios4 install took just under an hour, this included re-optimising and installing all 800+ photos. It was very sluggish at first, but a quick restart solved most things. Server based games such as godfinger, we rule etc seem to struggle more than they did before.

Sorted, a restart seems to have solved the problem, can take photos again. Still not decided on iphone 4 yet, luckily for me my O2 contract has just expired. Tariffs and phone costs not very appealing on any network.

Re the 3G - Apparently, with the 3G it's best to do a download and restore rather than an upgrade. Heard on MacBreak Weekly.
I'm doing mine in an hour or so once it's finished downloading and will report back

Now taking an age to restore all the apps, music etc. So don't start on this route if you're in a hurry!

Installed iOS4 on my iPhone 3G Monday night and have just realized today that almost none of my music would play except for the stuff i personally ripped from CD's. Just going through the tedious process of re-syncing music back over with convert to 128kbps off. Will let you guys know if it worked
UPDATE:- That seems to have fixed it

The deed is done. My 3G is now running iOS4. Following the advice here, I did the download and restore - left it overnight and woke up to find it still restoring - there does seem to be an issue with syncing podcasts which send it into an infinite loop. And I had lost all my passwords - but soon got them back thanks to 1Password. First impressions are that my phone is a lot snappier - and I certainly have more free space on the drive. Multitasking doesn't work on the 3G, of course. Folders make organising apps easier - I now only have 3 homescreens, instead of 4 or 5. One or two apps still need upgrading - most notably for me Simon the Sorcerer. Otherwise all seems relatively well.

Still holding off. I wonder if 4.0.1 will be long in coming. My guess is in about 2 weeks.

The rumour sites seem pretty convinced, but I haven't seen any actual evidence yet. Just held my first iPhone 4 and it is a thing of beauty. Couldn't test the aerial though as my colleague's switchover hadn't happened yet. I'm not having any software issues with the 3G now iOS 4 is installed.
