In a bit of a quandary. I use Mobile Me for syncing. They are scrapping iCal in favour of CalDav (but still calling it iCal). The iCal service stops at the end of May (I think). Apple recommend that I be on 10.6 before swapping over. I am on 10.5 So, do I buy 10.6? or not. The swap can be done on 10.5 but is not recommended. I would be foooooooked if I lose all my calendars.

My advice? If nothing is likely to break jumping from Leopard to Snow Leopard, fork over your £25 and stop worrying.

I'm confused…. does this mean you're on Snowy for your wonderful and zingy Air but still on 10.5 for an iMac or other?
I agree with Heather. Unless you've got someone nearby with a SL disc to tied you over till Lion - resuming that you can't install SL onto an iMac from the USB copy you get with a MB Air?

You have assessed correctly I do have Snowy on my MBA but my other three Macs are on 10.5 My "Master" Mac is a 24" iMac that has all my data on it. Perhaps I should just fork out. When is Lion due out though?

When is Lion due out though? Now, you know the rules: never install a new OS on the first version. Get Snow Leopard, install it and enjoy. When Lion comes out - which could be this autumn, or next summer, but it's going to be a while yet I'd wager - you should wait until at least 10.7. 3 for all the bugs to be found and squashed.

and as you know, Snowy IS good. I've found it more reliable and the little touches are nice.
The only reason that two of our machines are still on 10.5 is that we don't want to fork out several hundred quid on a VectorWorks upgrade…. back to Helen's sensibleness - which I think is different from sensibility ;o)

Does this now mean that to sync iCal with you iPhone you need MobileMe? And 10.6?
Can't you just plug the iPhone in like you would to sync an iPod?

You can sync your iPhone two ways. Even under the current system. Method one. Sync to Mobile Me Method two Sync via usb. (iTunes) If in error you have both systems active on one computer (as I did at one point) you end up with every event in your calendar duplicated. What this means is that you can have your iPhone synced with a Mobile Me account (just the parts that you need) as well as having a sync with your office/home computer via usb again just the parts you need. I suspect (but have not tried) that you can also sync elements with other services like Google or MS Exchange.

My advice? If nothing is likely to break jumping from Leopard to Snow Leopard, fork over your £25 and stop worrying. Well I have installed Snow Leopard now on my main machine. It installed without incident. I am letting it "settle in" before making more changes to my system.

There is another catch to the MobileMe "upgrade." As I understand it (which isn't much!), the new MobileMe calendars no longer use sync services for syncing. At one level this sounds like a great idea as sync services are pretty notorious for getting corrupted. However third party developers cannot use the new method to access calendar data. So, for example, if you use Office 2011 to sync iCal to an Outlook server - you now have to choose between that setup and MobileMe. Similarly, I use the extremely reliable Spanning Sync to sync iCal with Google Calendar which - unlike MobileMe - allows two way sharing of calendars. So my PA can make changes to my diary.
So, unless something changes before May 5 (not end of May, M le Chat - you can see I'm counting the days) - then I am going to have to switch off MobileMe and revert to using a cable to sync my iPhone/ iPad if/ when I remember.
As you can tell, I am seriously hacked off about this situation. Spanning are looking at ways round it, but so far have not found a solution.

That won't be an issue for me. However, I am a scaredy cat and can't bring myself to click the button yet.
