I am trying to restore an iPod using iTunes because it now fails to open at all only getting as far as the screen requesting connection to iTunes via a USB connector, that screen is so dark as to be practically invisible. After going through the Restore procedure it stops at a message saying it has failed - error 21, or sometimes error 1604. This seems to be a not uncommon problem so lots of suggestions appear following a Google search. I have tried most of these and those given on the Apple support pages but nothing works. Before taking to our local authorised Apple repair depot I thought as one last try I should seek the guidance of our expert friends here. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I am sure your Google skills are as good as mine. You have not said what iPod you have, but the advice is Google the way to hard reset the device. Then carry out the hard reset. It should then behave like a new iPod. Connect to iTunes and restore from backup. It it won't contact Apple.

I should have said that is a first generation iPod touch. Unfortunately I can't get past the stage of doing a Restore in iTunes. I have now abandoned any more time wasting and plan to take it to the local Authorised Apple repairer on Monday, hopefully a repair will be cheaper than buying a new one!

I took it in today and after a preliminary look they are keeping it for a £15 + VAT diagnostic check and will then report back. I will keep you posted.

An update, as promised. I contacted Micro Spot today for a progress report - they have had it plenty long enough! They said someone was working on it yesterday but without success and have offered an Apple Exchange for £101.75 + VAT. I was in a hurry so said I will will call them back. Meanwhile a friend has suggested that I should have asked whether this exchange is for a new iPod. I will do so, otherwise I might as well get a refurbished iPod direct from Apple for about the same price and delivered directly to my daughter. Not a very satisfactory ending I'm afraid.

I did not realise that it would cost you money to get an estimate. May I suggest a phone call to these people www.ukipodrepairs.co.uk/They have fixed my iPod on several occasions.

Very many thanks for the tip. They sound pretty good so I will probably give them a try when I get it back from Micro Spot.

I spoke to the very helpful people at Ukipod Repairs and they seemed pretty certain that the problem is due to a failed logic board that would be uneconomic to repair. Having already spent £18 on a diagnostic/failed repair attempt I have decided to cut my losses!
Anyone want to buy a non-working iPod Touch for the parts? also a fitted leather case. Any offers please let me know, otherwise I will try to sell it on Ebay where someone might want the screen or battery for example.

Sad that a repair is not economical. Still at least you now know.
