This was posted by Alex. Worthy of it's own threat I think.

« Reply #137 on Jun 3, 2011, 23:21 » I only made a Facebook account to talk to ISV, the organisation I'm going to Australia with. Each time I log in I feel like I lose a bit more intelligence. It's a breeding ground for stupidity. It's also the stalker's paradise. I am ashamed to admit that I have lurked on some profiles, particular girls I like but I'm not seedy enough to add them as a friend. My friends list has three people in it, one of which is ISV. The other two are my housemates.
So here's the predicament: Do I add everyone I know and then add the people I fancy? or Leave my profile and friends list as-is and lurk like a pervert at the school gates?
Adding people on Facebook just seems like a really seedy thing to do, even if I know them well. I've avoided Facebook since it began for this reason, my account is only a few weeks old. I signed up with an @live.co.uk address that I made specifically for Facebook because I don't want them contacting me/storing/spreading my proper GMail account information. I don't trust them at all.

Then you can gently chat up as many as you have time for. :-) Seems obvious to me. Facebook is about making friends is it not? Use the Wall with discretion though. Remember all the people on your list can see it.

Heh, another one of my musings... Maybe it's not as seedy as I think. I've just avoided Facebook completely since it started because its so pointless and stalkerish. Maybe that mindset is stuck with me and I can't get past that. It's not my thing. Also, I found last night that all girls seem to know each other somehow. It's very strange, it's all a very dangerous web.

^I mean that I was with my friends last night, we met him at the pub he works in. One of the girls who works there (has NOTHING to do with anything I do) just happens to be the housemate of the best-friend of the girl I like. And the very, very strange thing is: They both have the SAME NAME. It's a dangerous web. I can't help but think of the Six Degrees of Separation. Its absolutely right.

In the last couple of weeks I've really gave it a chance, and in that time I've come to despise it more than I already did. Every single time I log in I see updates supposedly made by me of pages that I've 'liked'. I did visit the pages, but they just like themselves. I didn't even know I was logged in! It records everything I do now. I hate it. I have gone completely extreme and completely cleared everything on Safari and only log into it in Chrome.
Another thing: A friend posted a link to a video today, something about an exploding shed. I clicked it, and the video didn't load. A while later my friend sends me a message, laughing, asking what I was watching. Turns out that the link/post/status whatever has changed and is now some kind of embarrassing TV nipple-slip thing, and Facebook says I liked it. I had to go back onto it, the video still wouldn't load and 'unlike' it. SERIOUSLY?!
That really annoyed me. What just happened there? I look like a pervert now and Facebook automatically likes pages I visit. F you, Facebook.

That is a pretty poor FB experience you are having there mate. I am not much of a techie, but is there some way to "re-boot" or ditch the pref folder or something?

It's nothing to do with Safari, it's because I logged into FB then just closed the window, leaving me logged in still. Facebook must have access to the pages I visit while logged in and obviously can automatically assume I like a page because I visited it. And it thinks I want the world to know what I'm doing 24 hours a day.
So like I said, I use Safari for browsing and Chrome just for FB. That way it can't track me because I'm logged in using a different browser while Safari has no trace of FB at all in either the cookies or history.

I dont use facebook very much, but when I do I always log out before closing the browser. I remeber hearing or reading something about this and from what I have just found I think this may solve your problem.
(From the facebook help centre) How do I control who can see pages I Like? You can control who can see your likes, activities and other connections from the "Connecting on Facebook" section of the Privacy Settings page. If you only allow your friends to see your pages from your profile, then you will also not appear in the list of people who like the Pages to non-friends. Note that if you post something to the page or comment on a post on the page, then your post or comment (including your name) will be visible in search and to others who view the page.
Hope this helps!

Also worth noting, I found plenty of info on java scripts that will automatically "like" the page you are on without clicking the button, so maybe a good idea to always log out anyway.

^Yeah, thanks for that info. I think I saw that post in the help centre myself after trying to find out what happened. And as for the Java scripts, of course. That makes sense now. imagine these scripts are used all over because it pretty much acts as a form of advertisement that you don't need to pay to do. You just hope that people visiting your site have loads of gullible friends!
